I'm not sure if I posted this or not (can't remember) but my aunt sent me some money for my birthday, so here's what I bought:

Sergeant Rock

Delivered this morning by the hardest working woman in the Bundespost: two discs of music by a composer new to my collection, Jean Cras (1879-1932), including his Piano Concerto performed by his daughter Colette. Baroque oboe concertos, including the Marcello D minor of which there has been some discussion recently. Fazil Say's Violin Concerto "1001 Nights in the Harem." And finally the Delius Florida Suite conducted by  Handley and recommended by...well, you know who  :D

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
                               --Charles Bukowski, "Mahler"

Excellent, Sarge! Enjoy! I loved Handley's North Country Sketches a lot as well. I'm finding his On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring to still be good but not as good as Norman Del Mar's (also on Chandos).

Hi Sarge - just added a couple of Jean Cras discs to my collection - both excellent!  Dave :)

Just placed the order on the following boxes in spite of some duplicates - I already have the original Jochum's Bruckner box ...

Wanted to bundle my purchases together in one post. And to change the images to the ASIN links, although some of these I did purchase as MP3s.
The Michael Nyman disc is a re-recording of the score from The Piano made in 2005.
The bottom Michael Collins recording was mainly for the Kats-Chernin piece, Ornamental Air.

Not quite to-day but recently:

[asin]B000094HLC[/asin]
Tuur: EXODUS (violin concerto etc)

[asin]B0000260TR[/asin]
Part: ARBOS (another old favorite I borrowed and listened to a number of times, years ago)

[asin]B0000261KO[/asin]
Borodin: "The Essential" (just dabbling, though the Martinon #2 is supposed to be an essential performance)

[asin]B0009VKR8K[/asin]
Taneyev: piano trio/quartet (Dutton) (hat-tip Bulldog-Don...my first Taneyev disc)

[asin]B001EQPDIS[/asin]
Handel: THEODORA by Somary (apparently chopped to bits, but my friend insists it is one of the great Handel recordings; plus I already have McCreesh's luminous HIP recording which is apparently very complete up to and including a "bonus" [?] aria or two....but then I'm still interested in Christie's two, with Sophie Daneman and with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, oh dear...when will it stop...)

A lot of good performances on this one!

Thanks Jut, that is good to know....I might know a little more Borodin than I realize, but it's a pleasure to discover a 'new' composer.  These days, I get to do that often several times a week!  A luxury.

Here are a couple I forgot to mention earlier.  Managed to get a new 'real' copy (knock on wood) through Amazon US-MP of the Machaut, since New Albion titles are all being produced as burn-to-order CDRs now.

[asin]B000000R3S[/asin]
Machaut: REMEDE DE FORTUNE (Ensemble P.A.N.)

Mozart: DON GIOVANNI by Furtwangler w/Tito Gobbi et al, 1950 (Opera d'Oro, 3cd)
(at my peril I ignore justified warnings about Opera d'Oro's cavalier quality control, esp. older titles of theirs like this....but the EMI is unaffordable where I've seen it, and I actually got one report from an acquaintance that the Opera d'Oro is comparable if not just as good....at any rate, twas ultra cheap)

This cover art puts me in really good mood, FWIW.  No idea why...

I thought the characters looked familiar on this cover... Looking the same as the ones in the Lloyds TSB bank TV ads in the UK... as it turns out, Lloyds used a "remix" of a kats-chernin work for their ad  ;D

that cover must be an outtake  :P

Hey, Dave. I almost ordered that quintet/quartet disc too, but for some reason was uncharacteristically conservative and hesitant. Maybe I'll include it in my next round of purchases.

I have 3 versions of Handel Theodora: by William Christie, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and McGegan on CD.  I think I have the version by Somary on LP, which I probably have not listened to in 25 years ...

You are lucky indeed.  My copy is just a CDR, which I am a bit leery as I have heard CDR tends to deteriorate over time while many of my 25 year old CD's continue to play well ...

After that time for safety I'd rip and re-burn them (if I played from CDs and not hard disks). Or you could store the ripped data and re-burn if an old copy deteriorates.

Thanks for the info, I had read it [Eliza's Aria] was featured in an ad but didn't know which one.

It appears I already ripped the CDR to my hard drive and the file is backed up on 2 different 1 TB Seagate external hard drives.  I have heard that some security code that had been burnt onto a CDR would have prevented you from making a copy of the CDR ...

Thanks to Sarge and SonicMan46, earlier today, from Amazon, I finally decided to pull the trigger and bought the Rowicki/LSO box set of Antonin Dvorak--The Complete Symphonies and Overtures. Thanks again, men!

I never purchased music on a CD-R, but I guess in principle what is playable on a CD player should be rippable with the right software. EAC is very good, in case you don't know it already.

North Star

£4 from Amazon UK, thanks to Daniel for pointing this out (naturally only after first ordering one for himself ;) )
