Bought another Schnittke on BIS that I didn't own:

More Schnittke on the way:

The price was definitely right for these three recordings and the reviewer Culver doesn't have his facts straight when he said there are cheaper alternatives to this Bashmet/Rozhdestvensky recording on Regis which I bought for $4.

By the Three Princes of Serendip!  By the Coincidences of Callimachus!

I opened this thread to report on two CDs I didn't actually purchase, but which I checked out of the local library, and one of  them includes what must be the same exact recording of the Viola Concerto!  It's from the Moscow Studio Archives series on Allegro, recorded in 1987.  Unless the same conductor, soloist and orchestra recorded it twice.....

It's coupled with the Concerto Grosso No. 2  same conductor, same orchestra, Oleg Kagan violin, and Ms. Gutman as his partner on the 'cello.    What works is used as the coupling on the Regis issue?

The other item was actually a set:  Gardiner's Schumann symphony cycle, one CD of which I have on now.  Never realized until I had in my hands that includes the early version of Symphony No. 4 and his early "Zwickau" symphony.

This reissue is the same performances and coupling as the Moscow Studio Archives, which is OOP, but this reissue's price was certainly much more enticing (paid $4 + shipping).

I'll keep that in mind if I decide to officially purchase this recording.
I know of at least one other Regis issue which is a reissue of a Moscow Studio Archives release (Shostakovich--Bashmet in the viola sonata and Kagan in the violin sonata, with Richter as pianist in both--IIRC, but I don't have the CD in front of me);  wouldn't be surprised if there is a series of them.

Yeah, it seemed that these Regis recordings are the way to go especially now with all of these Russian recordings going in and out of print. It's hard to keep track of everything that's been reissued but this Schnittke was the cheapest way to get these, otherwise, hard-to-find performances on disc.

Off-topic a bit, do you like Schnittke's music, Jeffrey? Any favorite works?

Especially for AnthonyAthletic who appreciates the skill of bargain hunting....

The other day I got an alert from amazon spain that something was going stupid cheap, must be a mis price cheap, they'll never honour that in a million years cheap....

Thinking what the heck I'll order it, and to maximise my chances I'll pay stupid amounts for p&p in the hope it's shipped before they realise...

I would have posted this up for others to chance their arm, but minutes after ordering, it was back to >160 euro...

So I ordered for 15 euro.
Expidited international shipping was 35 euro!!!

and today I received:

drum roll please....

This is only the second or third Schnittke CD I've heard, so I can't really answer  that.  At the moment,  I'm listening to the Concerto Grosso No. 2.    What I'm hearing (and what I've heard to date) is interesting, and does not turn me off, but doesn't exactly lure me on to investigate the rest of his music.

Keep listening is the only advice I can give anyone new to Schnittke. I didn't exactly warm up to his music either but time proved to be great healer.

Are you on a diet as well? I haven't bought a disc in three months and I am hoping to go at least another month.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Just found out this came out in February, with live recordings from 2000-2010, so...

Amazon doesn't include the contents, which are here (unfortunately, no dates): http://www.hbdirect.com/album/2423413-anthology-of-the-royal-concertgebouw-orchestra-live-the-radio-recordings-2000-2010-14-cds.html#tab_notes_and_reviews

Things that look especially tasty: Haydn Symphony No. 97 (conducted by Harnoncourt), Berio Rendering (Holliger), Bruckner Symphony No. 8 (Mehta), Shostakovich Symphony No. 13 (Masur), among many others.

Both were shipped for around $10 a piece.

Been listening to Caetani's DSCH cycle on Spotify and have mixed feelings. But the 9/10th, 1/15th and 11th discs are powerhouses, very passionate readings. Just purchased the 9/10th which along with my recent purchase of Barshai's complete cycle is starting to dress up my DSCH symphony collection quite nicely. More on the way, definitely from Caetani.

Hey Geo, I have the 3rd from this set, it's fantastic. Have 1,2 & 4 on my radar.

Excellent, Greg. I like Barshai's cycle a good bit. I'm still quite partial to Haitink's after all these years. The Caetani Shostakovich series is interesting. Obviously, not all the performances are up there with the best, but I loved the performances of the 4th and 11th. Good to see you get more into Shostakovich. As you know, he's a favorite of mine or have I told you that before? ;) :D

I think I've seen Dmitri occupy your avatar here and there.  :)  And Haitink might be the set I've heard the least from, although I do enjoy his 5th.
