There is a durability problem with -R media: the information is stored in a layer of dye, organic substances, and they are not as long lasting as a metal layer. I heard you should not rely on more than about 8 years lifetime with better ones. Bad CD-Rs can cause problems even earlier, as to hearsay.

I consider CD-Rs just as a temporary carrier, which I rip immediately after getting it.

As to ripping and compression: One can rip to WAV files, they are lossless and uncompressed. But it is a waste of disk space - and time: With the current computers loading a losslessly compressed file from the hard disk and then de-compressing it (automatically in the player) is faster than retrieving an uncompressed WAV-File without further processing.

PS: And some lossless formats allow integrity checks: They are inbuilt with the APE format and possible with FLAC. That is handy if you want to check a big collection on a hard disk for file integrity and diskerrors.
They also damage a lot easier then Redbook CD. I take extremely good care of my stuff and most of my CD's are flawless but yet these CD-R's I've owned still manage to get scuffed up somehow. I've never owned a single one that didn't start malfunctioning in someway after a relatively short time. I refuse to by them anymore unless it was something I really wanted that I could not get in a real format at a reasonable price, and even then I would immediately rip it to my hard drive.

You're gonna like those. Especially the Morales. That is my better half's favorite recording.

The new erato

I think I have all those. I particularly like the Lassus Missa Susan un jour on the Naxos disc, though the Morales disc is no slouch either.

Landed today from Arkivmusic.

Notes.
The Vivaldi CD is slightly misleadingly titled for an Anglophone.  As the blizzard of recorders suggests, the solo instruments used are recorders/flautinos.  In other languages it is not misleading, of course: flauto dolce, Blockflote, flute a bec.  Works include chamber concertos, a concerto with multiple soloists, and three concertos for recorder and strings.
The Schumann CD contains the Abegg variations, two Fantasiestucke (Opp. 12 and 111), and the Geister Variations (Variations in E Flat).  Instrument is an Erard from 1837.
Podger CD includes works by Frescobaldi and others of that era.
Hewitt's AoF runs to 89 minutes 43 seconds, and follows the original edition in having an incomplete Contrapunctus 14 followed by Wenn wir in hochsten Noten sein.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Last Sunday my internet connection stopped working. On tuesday I discovered that the power suply of my modem is going dead. The LEDs works, but no connection. Now, I use my old Commadore Amiga power supply for my modem. My bank changed my credit card from Visa to Mastercard. I'm not able to input my new card in www.play.com so I has unable to order 2 DVDs of old Doctor Who yesterday. I was so pissed off I had to order SOMETHING where my new card works (Amazon.co.uk):

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

I went to my favorite used bookstore and came across these two gems! They were in excellent shape (hardcover) at a cost of only $10 each. Even better, teach book included a cd with Charles Rosen. Wonderful additions to my music library as well as my skimpy Rosen collection. I very much enjoy his writing and analysis as he takes a very poetic approach to music. Interesting perspectives. This will be fascinating reading!!!

The best kind of damage, though. ;)
That's a great disc, Olivier.

Their newest one looks tempting, too (I'm not really referring to the cover here..)

I know, you praising this one swayed it instead of the Van Nevel version  :blank:  ;D

I have also wish-listed their Vaet, Monte & Regnart for later...  0:)
