This is THE recording to have of course, as the work was written with her style and special abilities in mind and with her contribution as well. I first knew about this recording when it was given to me by their daughter. I have treasured it ever since.

I wasn't familiar with much about Berberian before this purchase, but now I see that she was married to Berio. I guess he must've known fairly well about all her talents.  8)

Jeffrey -

Nice purchases!   :)  The Italian Baroque Edition set is quite good.  The included version of Monteverdi's Vesper's is one of the finest I've heard.

Que -

Nice haul there!   ;)
Wise words from Que:

Jakuc is a fine fortepianist, I think this might be an interesting disk. Hope so!

Nice combination of works anyway, the CPE Bach is the only one I don't know really well, so a good comparison of musical ideas... but I fantasize...  :D

Works:
1. Fantasy in C Minor, K. 475 By W.A. Mozart
2. Sonata in C Minor, K. 457 By W. A. Mozart
3. Fantasia in C Major W. 61/6 By Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach
4. Fantasia (Capriccio) in C Major Hob. Xvii:4 By Joseph Haydn
5. Moonlight Sonata in C# Minor, Op. 27 #2 By Ludwig Van Beethoven

From browsing amazon.de it seems that the original issues of that Weill series are mostly oop and often expensive used. I think for several pieces those might be the only recordings at all. I only know Latham-Koenig's "Mahagonny" which is in better sound and more complete than the Brückner-Rüggeberg with Lenya from the late 1950s but lacks some of the "spirit". Still not bad and except for the rather frequently recorded Dreigroschenoper and 7 deadly sins the Weill discography is not great and that series is better than nothing.

The deeper problem for me is that these works are very hard to cast. opera singers sound often stylistically wrong and singing actors cannot sing well enough. Furthermore there is a tradition based on the mannerisms of the aging Lenya in the 1950s with exaggerated gestures that is very different from the understated style we can witness in the recordings around 1930, basically with the "original cast" of the Threepenny opera. And Mahagonny, the most ambitious of Weill's German language works is even more difficult because one needs technically better singers for some of the roles.

I believe this marks my 20th Sibelius symphony cycle. Yeah, I'm kind of a Sibelius fan. ;) ;D

Abuelo Igor

I have an album in that series, my only one in fact, that features the "Kullervo" symphony. The cycle is not yet complete...

Hey Peter - that is a hefty box of the BAT recordings (assume complete!) - my two largest boxes are the Scarlatti works w/ Scott Ross (34 discs) & Haydn symphonies w/ Adam Fischer (33 discs) - congrats and looking forward to your comments - Dave :)

Oh dear, how could I forget about Saraste's Kullervo? It's pretty easy when it's out-of-stock. ;)

I'm not buying much classical music these days, but I ordered this:

I wasn't completely floored when I first heard Shaham's performance of Sibelius' VC several years ago, but I re-listened to the first movement on YouTube and was impressed enough this time around to buy the recording. I also enjoyed Sinopoli's accompaniment.

:) It was hard to refuse these recordings as buying them overseas was the only option as I looked and looked for them on Amazon US. I finally went with Amazon Germany. All six recordings (+ shipping) ended up costing me $70, which isn't too bad.

Not bad! Don't forget that $83 is your monthly maximum!  >:D
I don't even dare to calculate my average monthly expense. Fortunately I am slowing down...   Way down!
Lots to hear in the fantastic Sibelius Edition boxes, but I have been encamped in the realm of historical recordings over the last week.
