Which Blomstedt? Danish or San Francisco? I'll agree Bernstein's is one of the greats.

I once had that in a previous incarnation - found the music pleasant yet utterly boring......  :(

The new erato

Totally agree. Utterly boring with some redeeming qualities in no 3.

Brian

Another voice of agreement. Boring tunes, cliches, and the symphonies are just too long.

kishnevi

I have the EMI performances.

Que's opinion states my view rather precisely.  The Concerto for Two Pianos does not make this an item worth rushing out for.

The symphonies are okay, but the performance is utterly boring. Masur was always a slow mover from the old school.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

The new erato

I have Conlon. He cannot do much for them either.

I guess I need to drink a glass or two of wine before listening to the Bruch symphonies considering your thoughts?   ;D  :o

That is a pretty good plan!

My favorite Bruch: string octet, string quintet, piano quintet, concerto for viola and clarinet. Oh and I think he wrote some violin concertos  ;)

I have almost all his orchestral music, and what is always bugging me, is that conductors are not able to get a grip on his symphonies. They are not boring or full of cliches, they simply need a professional interpretation.

Are there any other recordings besides Conlon and Masur?

The Naxos 1/2 is not good but #3 might be because it's conducted by Manfred Honeck.

For a moment I read that as "Naxos Half"....
I will look for Honeck.
