The new erato

Popp's Four Last Songs is divine. Heavenly interpretation. After Jessye Norman, it's my favorite performance. Tennstedt's accompaniment is right on-the-mark, too. I have the original issue of this Popp/Tennstedt recording and it's coupled with an absolutely gripping Death & Transfiguration. Anyway, enjoy, my friend!
It was your recommendation that prompted the purchase. Always willing to listen to another lover of these phenomenal songs (I'm a della Casa lover myself).

Bruce really enjoyed this Popp performance as well. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on the performance once you've heard it.

So this was the musical part of my order:

Great! A lot of this music I never heard before. The only recording that disappointed me was Slavonic Rhapsodies coupled with Hero's Song. I wish Neumann had conducted these works. But the rest of the set is quite enjoyable.

Excellent choice!

I also own this one (very cheap on Amazon), and still my favourite version:

Excellent disk, isn't it? IMO, their piano trios are even better.

I also have the newer versions of both the quartets and the trios. They are most excellent. There is rather a lot to say with these works, and no end, seemingly, of ways to say it. PBS/Festetics, Oort et al, Hugget/Sonnerie, Lubin/Mozarteans, Bilson et al on Arkiv, probably 3 or 4 others I have, including some on modern instruments like the BAT. I think someone in here said you can't go wrong no matter which you get. Have to agree with that, they each have their strengths, but once you get to the point where you are looking for a new set because you wonder what a 1795 Walter reproduction* would sound like here, then you have pretty much wrung out what the music has to offer and gone to the edge of arcana.   :)

* - it sounds quite nice, I must say.

Excellent disc indeed. I must, therefore, check out their Trios.

Great to hear. Yeah, I remembered you posting about this set on the 'Listening' thread not too long ago, but I'm giving the set to my dad as he already owns the Kertesz's symphony set and didn't have have these other performances in his collection.

You should give it a listen before or after you present it to your dad  :)

Just arrived ! Symphonies 5 and 6 are pure delight.

If you search "Swedish Contemporary" in Amazon MP3 under the Phono Suecia label, you'll find four great bargain sets of Swedish contemporary duos, quintets, concertos, and orchestral works, each for $7.99. I believe the recordings are all drawn from other Phono Suecia recordings. That's <$40 for 15+ hours of well-recorded and well-performed Swedish contemporary stuff :)

Yes, I took the bait.

André

Phono Suecia is a great label. And of course the music it presents is fully worthy, too!

Absolutely. I'm going to rip a CD of it beforehand. :)
