Mirror Image, I've already explored Shostakovich and like what I hear.  I'm particularly taken by some of the String Quartets, and am getting to know the symphonies more intimately - they're clearly a varied bunch!  I don't know Weinberg and Schnittke at all, so thanks for that tip. 

Thanks Fafner - I love Symphony No. 3, and I've known that for a good few years now.  I should have said that I've got a decent knowledge of Contemporary Classical music (particularly Glass, Part, Nyman and to a lesser extent Bryars, Reich and Adams) and I'm sure I'll keep listening to these works as I explore earlier and (in general) more tonally complex stuff.
