Prompted by the Holmboe Thread...

Sibelius...

Kokkonon
Holmboe
early Norgard
Sallinen
Aho
:oSwedes ???

yea, I don't know what I'm doing here. Please, someone, take over :-[ ;D...

I like Sallinen the best at the time being. Holmboe just never fulfilled the 'it' that I needed, post-Sibelius No.7.

OK, there's a good one. What are your top works?

Symphonies 3, 7 and 8, "Daydreams" from Manhattan Trilogy, Autumn Gardens, Garden of Spaces, the Clarinet Concerto and, yes  ;) ...Cantus Arcticus.

Sarge, have you heard the Vigilia?  It's not Henning, but it is excellent nonetheless  0:)

Pettersson - starting with Symphony 7 - the Dorati recording if you can find it
Aho - try the Contrabassoon Concerto

Nothing's like Henning  ;)  but I won't hold that against him. And no, I have not heard it. In fact, I have none of Rautavaara's vocal music. I'll check it out.

Copied over, light-heartedly, from the Purchases Today thread:

Kalevi Aho's arrangement of Flight of the Bumblebee for flute and orchestra is "genius! The solo line is almost completely untouched, but Aho adds some great contrapuntal solos to pit the flute against the other winds, and there are a few fun orchestral interjections that bring both menace and humor. Great big smile of a piece, uses almost the whole orchestra but is very light on its feet."

That said, I may not vote for Aho. Adon't know.

Aho, Lindberg, Holmboe, Pettersson, and Rautavaara are my favorite post-Sibelius Nordic composers.

Wait! Late Atterberg counts, if we're using Sibelius' retirement as the cutoff rather than Sibelius' death.

But for me, in no particular order, Atterberg, Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen, Holmboe, and the talented family of Herman, Benjamin, and Anders Koppel. I look forward to exploring more music by Geirr Tveitt; first impressions were good. I dislike the Lindberg I've heard.

12tone.

Is Holmboe atonal?  I think his SQs are eh?

Jan Garbarek and the voice of Agnes Buen Garnås.

I do like the mellifluous Arve Moen Bergset aswell.

Well, pretty much what he said, in the main, with Norgard.

*and Rosenberg* ... shhhh..

Of course.

But I still like that little clip very much. The music is as invigorating as Le sacre and Pelle's movements are really "real". He "is" his music and enjoys it.

That is how I see and hear it.
