Does anyone know if footage survives of the pie fight scene that was originally supposed to end Dr. Strangelove? It was filmed, from what I've heard.

BTW, this documentary on Kubrick is very good:

So there was fighting in the war room after all? :D

Now, if I had to pick one GMG'er to say that, it'd be you! Ha!

PS: Good pick. I almost picked it.

What did people think of Eyes Wide Shut?
Of those I have seen, his worst film by far. I couldn't wait for it to end.

An interesting film, I don't get all of the hate poured onto it.  His worst effort would have been AI.  The cheesiness was not Spielberg's fault.  Kubrick really wanted to make an atypical (for him) heartwarming fairy tail and the ending was his.

I find Eyes Wide Shut quite interesting.  The story may be implausible if you accept it but the management of suspense in the film is masterful.

This is a rather bizarre statement, stating that someone's worst effort would have been something that was never made.  You can't really make a qualitative assessment about something that doesn't exist.  If people want to see his worst work, there are the pre-Paths of Glory movies.

I'll restate it as considering all of the elements of AI that were originally Kubrick's, and having a finished film done by his friend to honor his wishes for the film, done by the director that collaborated on it with him for years, I can state as a well informed opinion that had Kubrick finished the film himself, it would have been one of his weaker projects.

I suppose he could have made last minute decisions to save the film, but that is unlikely.  And really my opinion is not bizarre at all or illogical.

This is dubious, to say the least.  He didn't make the film.  There is no way you can make a meaningful assessment of something that doesn't exist.  That's rather like speculating on how Europe would have been different had Napoleon won at Leipzig.  Contrafactual arguments can certainly appear logical, but that doesn't mean they are accurate.

Eyes Wide Shut

Could someone please explain this film to me. I just saw it recently on tv: I was in the other room when the gothic organ and choir music from the ritual scene was playing. of course I was intrigued, and I gathered immediately that it was EWS. So I missed the beginning (which I caught most of the next night), but, as I continued, I just felt that Kubrick's choice after choice decisions were almost pathological (not a good word choice).

1) Why is Cruise's character so stupid, doing the same things that idiots in horror movies do?

2) Why does the film end on the word 'fuck'?

3) Is there significance in losing track of the youngster at the very end (it almost implies that the adults, in their navel-gazing, forget about their child and would let baddies abduct her???)

4) What's the significance of the costume shop owner and his daughter/asians?

5) Why does Pollacks speech leave me eh?

6) Is Cruise really gay? What's the purpose of having a married couple play out adultery fantasies on screen? Creepy?

7) Kubrick picks very nice breasts. One positive.

8) The piano music (I thought it was Galina U., but it's Ligeti?) was obviously picked for it mind numbing qualities.

I could go on. Does anyone having a meaningful clue?

Just re-visited this one recently. Loved it in every way - from the opening shot to the last word of dialog. Classic Kubrick.

I totally agree with you: Stylistically is a Kubrick movie from the very first shot to the last. It was a memerizing experience when I watched it the first time, when it was premiered in Chile... No, it wasn't two months ago!  :P :D

Dr. Strangelove, but 2001 I saw in the theater when I was a kid...it came out when I was 8! So 2001 is special.

I was 13 and saw it eight times on the wide screen at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. Dragged all my family to see it, none of whom enjoyed it as much as I did.

You're thinking too much about this movie. It is not a satisfying movie.

Don't overanalyze the film, let the plot and characters reveal themselves on the film's terms. It's like a David Lynch film, if you ask or search for all the answers you diminish the power of the mystery.  :)

Full Metal Jacket is a masterpiece! Although pretty much all his movies are awesome, this one is my own personal #1.

I'll go with you guys. I didn't find it "satisfying", but that only heightens my inquiry (being that Kubrick is supposed to be so transcendent). As a "watch and go" I find it even more maddening: I just CAN'T shut off my brain with the likes of Kubrick. I like the chess analogy, but, does that mean that Kubrick is just having an in-joke with his illuminist buddies?
