Damn, I just can't choose!  I like Lully the best in this one, I think that staff beating would have driven me crazy, and so good riddance to bad rubbish. But Chausson and the bicycle wreck is just so cool. I can't choose, I swear.

Damn, I hope the auto-erotic asphyxiation isn't our friend Snipper. He's been known to compose too.... :-\

My winner, though likely not true, if Alkan

Among the confirmed ones, Chausson it is!

Magnard was killed by German soldiers.
Was it Albeniz who was drowned with his wife when their ship was torpedoed by a U Boat?

I was reading just the other day of a musical figure c. 1900 who was killed at the age of 72 when he fell getting off a bus and hit his head, but don't recall who it was--not even if it was a composer.  Anyone have an idea who the victim was?

Sounds like how Granados went. Granados got torpedoed; didn't know his wife was there.

EDIT: Albeniz died of a kidney problem at age 48.

Thank you.  I knew it was one of the Spanish composers....IIRC,  he might have survived,  but he tried to save his wife, and instead both drowned.

Now, can anyone point out the 72 year old who fell on his head?

Well. this guy fits the description, but I don't think he achieved the level of fame to be the person you're thinking of.   ???

Alternatively, how about "stabbed to death and partially dismembered by a prostitute?"

Chauson: at the bottom of a steep hill on a bicycle

Alkan: buried under his manuscripts when cupboard fell on top of him.

My favourite of all: Aretino (Writer at the time of Italian Renaissance): died laughing at an indecent joke.

Auto-erotic asphyxiation

That was Frantisek Koczwara, or Kotzwara (why do I know this??), who was famous for that and precisely nothing else.  The Wikipedia article is worth a read for the level of detail it supplies.  Effortlessly beats anyone else, IMHO.

Drowned

Robert Parsons - another favourite not because I have anything against Parsons, who was quite a decent composer, but because his death created a vacancy in the Chapel Royal that was filled by Byrd.

And poor Debussy's end (terrible pun not intended) would be impossible to guess from those three luminous final chamber works.  Brings tears to the eyes in all sorts of ways.

We are agreed yet again, Todd. Lully's tale has always provided an inner chortle on a gloomy day. Koczwara  is new to me, glad he has been identified now though. I was curious ab out who did the deed, so to speak. Isn't it like eating fugu sashimi though? You takes your chances.  >:D

By the weight of his own music?

Seriously, I'd rather celebrate composers' lives.  Although Lully's death is a moral lesson on the benefits of conducting only with one's hands. ;)

Wagner ---> Heart Attack (Heart Failure).

If only they had Virgin Active, a low Saturated fat/Cholesterol diet back in the 19th Century maybe, just maybe we could have had one more music drama past Parsifal.
