Does "schlechtvalk" literally translate as "bad falcon"? Or???  It looks like a peregrine falcon...I think....lots of birds out there!

De slechtvalk is indeed a Falco peregrinus.  The (now obsolete) word "slecht" in slechtvalk, means "simpel" (cfr. German "schlicht"). It still can be found in the word "slechts" which means...simply, only..).

Slecht is also "bad" .Etymology:
From an earlier meaning of "simple, ordinary, inferior, plain", from Middle Dutch slecht ("smooth, flat"), from Old Dutch *sleht, from Proto-Germanic *slihtaz.
