Kiont

Hello, just started listening to Classical a few months ago, and as anybody with a decent library, I have hundreds of random classical tracks, but never payed too much attention to them.

Then I started looking for advice, and focusing on specific performances/composers, instead of just the "hits" everybody knows. Well the more I listen, every other genre becomes second.

Just hope to learn and discover more, and not burn myself out in the process.

Hi Kiont, and welcome. Apparently you've been bitten by the classical bug! Enjoy your exploration - there's a great deal of pleasure ahead of you.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I've been going through this book as well
Classical Music: The 50 Greatest Composers and Their 1,000 Greatest Works.

His recommendations are very good for starters, but I think they are just the tip of the iceberg.

Oh it's already feeling it, have already purchased several CD's, and a subscription to B&W Society of Sound, which I give it credit for giving me the first push into classical.

Indeed! The world of classical music is more vast and varied than some sources may suggest. :)

You are 100% correct. And as you can see from the various threads here, even bringing up the subject of "50 Greatest" anything causes a huge variety of opinions.

Anyway, there is an enormous universe to explore in classical music, and you should do it at your own pace, and following your own instincts.

I couldn't have said it better, Bruce! The part I bolded is especially important. You don't always have to start out with the "Three Bs" and other composers that some (wrongly) say that you "have to get to know" before you move on to other music. :)

And on that front, my advice is to take words like "essential" and "mandatory" with a huge grain of salt.

Anyway, welcome!

Incredible good advice. Words ike these may mean:

"This is the only recording of this work I don't already own."

or

"This work has never been recorded before."
