Hello all,

I listened to Jon Leifs 'Geysir' on Radio3 the other night. I thought it was amazing.

Do any of you have any particular recommendations for music in the same vein - moody, massive, mystical(?)?

I've ordered said piece http://www.amazon.co.uk/Geysir-Jon-Leifs/dp/B0000264UL/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1386865147&sr=1-2&keywords=jon+leifs from Amazon - are other discs of Leifs' work that are currently available to buy also worth checking out? I'd never heard of him until a few days ago.

Grateful thanks for any responses to this post.

Hafis comes to mind first, but there are lots of others.

Here is the official Leifs thread.

You're a star North Star.

Bear with me, new to forums, and not the greatest with computer stuff, so taking me some time to navigate about.

I think this thread link will be just the ticket.

Many thanks

You're welcome!
The Composer Index is a great tool for finding the composer topics that aren't in the recordings subforum.

Another top tip, thanks, again, North Star!

This is an amazing site, So much to explore....

Naughty I know but can't wait for Geysir cd to turn up, so have got a pal to download and burn a copy for me... that'll make the journey to work interesting come Monday morning.

If it wasn't for the mountain of ironing I'd've got past page 3 of the Leifs thread by now.

You are ready for Messiaen ( In expecto resurrectionem mortuorum), Varèse ( Ecuatorial, Arcana, Amériques), Ruggles ( Sun Treader), B.A. Zimmermann (Symphony in 1 movement) K.A.Hartmann: all the symphonic works.
Matthijs Vermeulen( anything), Willem Pijper (symphonies 2 &3)..Peter Mennin, Charles Wuorinen, George Rochberg...Miloslav Kabelac...
Possibly some Jolivet, Milhaud ( he wrote more than just Scaramouche)
Add some exotic spice : Alberto Ginastera, Marlos Nobre

Leifs is a very cool composer. If you want something off-the-beaten track besides the normal sonic blockbusters from Leifs, then listen to Réminiscence du Nord for string orchestra. Great work.
