I constantly see runs within the listening and purchasing threads where a particular composer sticks out for members here.  Sometimes the run lasts a week or so, or a bit more. Thought it would be fun to hear about who you are mostly playing and why.

A thread tailor-made for John. He can post daily and keep this thread going for years.

This year, in addition to my Beethoven piano sonata journey (fixation, addiction, obsession, all three?), I spent a good deal of time listening to Handel and continued exploring polyphony from the Renaissance.  I'm not sure what 2014 may bring.

Would you add your run with Rubinstein due to your box set purchase?

Yes.  I still have quite a bit to listen to, too.

Right now, I am really into the Smetana Quartet recordings.  This is netting Dvorak, LvB, Brahms and Mozart listening from recordings in the 60's and 70's....an interesting period for recordings, imo.

Right now, Havergal Brian and Rubbra are keeping me rather busy. Two quite different composers and both with, in my opinion, equally recognizable sound-worlds.

For me it was all about Verdi's COMPLETE operas and that glorious DECCA mega boxeset that I purchased  early this year to commemorate the 200th Anniversary. Why? Because I discovered that every Verdi opera is a class act.

And recently, I know Sammy  8) is going to love this: the Bach organ works. What can say but that Peter Hurford set is to DIE FOR! Why? Well it is said that when it comes to the organ there is JS Bach......and then there is everyone else! Now I know why! I am convinced now that there is no greater keyboard player than Bach. I say this with due respect to Mozart, Liszt, Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert and Schumann.

2013 for me has definitely been Russian music, in general.  Many new discoveries.

Shostakovich has joined Beethoven and Brahms as my three equally favourite composers.

2013 is the first year, since I started listening to classical music 8 or 9 years ago, that a composer other than Beethoven has been my most listened to composer.

Dmitri Shostakovich

:)

Oh, and the latter part of 2013, and rolling into 2014, sees me listening to all of Haydn's symphonies for the first time.  It has been a great journey, thus far.  :)

I could go three months with just Haydn and Shostakovich . . . .

So many treasures to be had there. Which set do you have? I have Fischer on Brillant.

For me, Beethoven quartets and Brian, I suppose.
