How Does One Find Out Who Owns a Particular Domain Name?

Wow, don't get a headache trying to read that Thread Title!!

I guess the question is self-asking? We went to look, and lo, it was taken, but my friend thinks that someone we know already has it and has forgotten about it. Does anyone know how to track down these things without paying for an agent?

You can try whois.com. Go there, search for the domain name, and it should be listed as being taken. You can click on the Whois for that link to see the registrar info to see who owns it.
