... or the portable device of your preference.  :)

To add music to our personal portable devices is still a work, so it deserves to be duly documented.  :D

Cool idea for a thread. Yes it is work to get the files exactly how you want them. I will be participating soon, once my new iPod arrives (hopefully today).

Excellent, stingo!!!  :)

On the Mätthaus Passion performed by Koopman and his gang:

It had been a while since I listened to this set (only 2 disks), so my recalls were a bit foggy. Yesterday I listened to the first part and the beginning of part 2 in detail. And the overall impression was uneven.

Pros: The skills of The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, a well oiled "war machine", and the detailed soundstage.

Cons: Some soloists, particularly Jörg Dürmüller and Klaus Mertens. Dürmüller is technically excellent, but he lacks in authority that I'm expecting in the Evangelist; he fulfils the narrative job, but doesn't convey the impression of pedagogic authority that remarkable, for instance, in singers like Kurt Equiluz. Mertens generally sounds as lacking in emotional deepness and "guts". Unfortunately, this affects the emotional voltage of the complete performance.

Today I will listen to the remaining part of disk 2.

My new iPod is synching with my library so I'd have WAY too much to post. lol I will start posting when I put something new on.

I thought I might like to listen to some Early Music this weekend so I added the following box-sets from my library:

I delete/add stuff to my iPod all the time (every day almost) - my goal is to have it filled with my favourite music. As my tastes are always changing all the time I never achieve my goal :)

I have that Fretwork Viol CD set on mine - a good reminder to put some earprints on it soon.

Those three sets are wonderful, Conor!  :)

I added some time ago three of those Dowland's disks: the First Booke of Songes, the Second Booke of Songes and A Pilgrim's Solace.

These days I have added a lot of material:

J.S. Bach - Cantatas Vols. I, II, III & IV/ American Bach Soloists

Complete Collected Harpsichord Works of J.S. Bach/ Antony Newman

J.S. Bach - Six Motets BWV 225-230/ Bach Collegium San Diego

Thomaskantoren before Bach/ Cantus Cölln

Si Fossi Foco (Vivaldi, Pachelbel, Telemann)/ Bezdin Ensemble

J.S. Bach - French Suites (2,3,4 & 5)/ Katherine Roberts Perl

Schütz - Psalms, Motets, Concertos/ Cantus Cölln

:)

I do not recall just who it was here on GMG who mentioned the Phillips Go Vibe, but I fetched one in a few weeks ago, and I like it a lot.

I say that, but in fact I've only started to load 'er up . . . .

So, last night, I loaded 'er with:

That was me, Karl. I had you in mind at the time, too. 0:)  Mine is now 3 years old, I use it for a minimum of 2 hours/day and it has been faultless so far. :)

If it's too late to play a recording right when I receive it through my stereo, then I usually rip it to one of my iPods. I have found that with some kind of system for labeling the disc(s), it becomes much easier to navigate and find the recording you just put on. I've detailed this in another iPod related thread. Hopefully, I never have to actually re-title the track names, but occasionally I will have to make corrections. This is partly because I think Gracenote are, in most cases, completely incompetent. :) Now, if a whole recording is messed up in terms of wrong labeling, then it can become quite a task to make corrections, especially if it's a large box set.

I wouldn't want to come off as argumentative on that point, but I retag every single disk I buy because frankly isn't just Gracenote, it's every tag database. It seems that only the morons contribute tags to them... :-\

However, in at least 90% of the disks I tag, thanks to the fact that I DO use a system, I only type the body of the tag once, then I go through and copy and paste all the others, only making one of two digit changes plus the tempo indication in each one. I can do a whole 4 disk box set in under 20 minutes this way. Of course, 15 years of practice hasn't hurt me any. :D

Oh yes, you've got to have a system of some kind. I, of course, rename the title of the album, because I search by album on my classical iPods. Sometimes the names of the individual tracks aren't that bad, so I don't have to rename them. Sometimes I'll have to rename the artist, but, again, I always rename the album.

Karl Henning

I'll raise my hand as a fairly regular re-tagger, myself . . . .

My iTunes has been persnickety of late, which is why I haven't contributed to this thread with new additions yet. Hoping to get that resolved soon.

So I have decided the first listen will be through my iPod.  :)
