Radiohead - OK Computer
Pink Floyd- The Dark Side of the Moon
The Velvet Underground & Nico
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beatles - Revolver
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Radiohead - Kid A

I guess I missed most of those listed bar Led Zeppelin IV and Kind of Blue, never been a serious Beatles fan but like bleeding chunks.

My random popular albums would be more akin to:

Machine Head/In Rock/Live in Tokyo : Deep Purple
Black Sabbath/Paranoid : Black Sabbath
Live in the Heart of the City/Ready & Willing : Whitesnake
Meat Loaf...you know the one....'the sirens are screaming'
Road to Hell : Chris Rea (poss the best driving cd of all time) ? ? ?  8)

Guess the Greebo in me is still alive  8)

QuotePeople keep buying "Kind of Blue" ignoring at the same time what Clifford Brown, Gil Evans or Gato Barbieri have to offer.

I think this statement vastly overstates the case.  Most of the people I have encountered who bought Kind of Blue have more than one jazz record in their collection and enjoy a variety of jazz artists.

I wish people where openminded and tolerant. I wish we didn't judge each other so hard.

You said this right after you were an elitist snob deriding those that voted on Kind of Blue.  Kind of hypocritical.

My point is people might like Kind of Blue because others like it too. It has become an album in everyones mind. No problem if people like it but why don't people mention other great jazz albums? That's my point with Kind of Blue.

Well, but this is a poll with just a small sampling of very popular albums;  that's the point of the poll.

Yes, but Kind of Blue got selected. Again.  :P Kind of proves my point.

Who cares if they don't mention other jazz albums along with Kind of Blue? What difference does it make to you? If a person is interested in jazz, then, naturally, they will discover other great jazz albums, too.

Personally, I've heard enough jazz through the last 15 years to come to conclusion that, yes, Miles' A Kind of Blue is one of the best I've heard. It doesn't matter to me how popular it is and how often people rave about it or even how many people flock to it. It's still a stellar album regardless of all these things that surround it.

Yep.  A bit odd to have to point this out, though.

Yes, like my father who doesn't think Kind of Blue is THE best jazz album ever. My father is the reason I wrote about Kind of Blue here.

My father (who listens to jazz almost only) says he almost hates "Kind of Blue" nowadays because so many name it as their favorite jazz album as if all the other great jazz albums didn't exist.

I prefer Out to Lunch.

A great album.  I must say, I prefer it to Kind of Blue, too . . . which is nothing against Kind of Blue.

No matter what we do or say there's always people telling us what assholes we are. If we listen to classical music only, we are "elitistic". If we listen to pop music too we have bad taste.  :P

I wish people where openminded and tolerant. I wish we didn't judge each other so hard.

The selection of "popular albums" is ridiculously narrow. People keep buying "Kind of Blue" ignoring at the same time what Clifford Brown, Gil Evans or Gato Barbieri have to offer.  People keep buying "OK Computer" while ignoring what Danish rock band Kashmir or British Lowgold have to offer.

So, ignore what is popular and find your OWN favorites. Sometimes what you like is liked by many others, sometimes you are almost to only one.

I don't see many Tangerine Dream fans on this forum. When I go to the official Tangerine Dream forum, nobody over there listens to classical music (typical Tangerine Dream fans do have extremely narrow music taste, which is strange considering how rich Tangerine Dreams music is). I listen to both so where do I belong to?

Okay, you might be able to imagine someone liking both classical music and Tangerine Dream, but I also admire Kesha (the artist formerly known as Ke$ha)! So, I am a weirdo just being genuinely myself.
1 I like Tangerine Dream
2 you and I are not elitist. We are elite.

I saw Tangerine Dream circa 1986 at the Beacon Theater in NYC.  Excellent show.
