If you were me, which ones would you listen to first?  The candidates are:

Murray Perahia: the First Forty Years (68 CDs plus 4 DVDs of which 30 duplicate recordings--the Mozart concerto cycle among them--I already have)
2 (15.4%)
CPE Bach Edition (30 CDs)
2 (15.4%)
Great Choral Works: The Best Recordings (30 CDs)
2 (15.4%)
EMI Eminence (50CDs)
5 (38.5%)
wait on these boxes and start cracking on the Solti conducts Strauss/Mozart/Wagner and other goodies waiting in the opera pile
2 (15.4%)

As I come to the close of a first run through of one big box--the 50CD EMI France Beethoven box--it is time to consider what big box I should listen to next.
Choices as above, one vote per GMGer.
There's also the Big Rubinstein box, but current plans are to save that for last.
If you were me, which ones would you listen to first?

I'm not much of a Solti fan, but I'd have to say Solti's Wagner.

Box sets are for chumps. ;)

Having said that, I voted for EMI. And I must admit, I'm impressed you made it through a whole box set of 50 CDs.  :)

50 CDs is nothing.  You're talking to the guy who has listened to TWO Complete Bach boxes.  The best strategy is to think of them as sets of sets;  listen to one segment at a time, without necessarily needing to finish everthing at one go.  It took me two years or more to give the Bach sets a complete run through.  Of course, with the current alternatives,  that strategy won't work quite as well.

The EMI Eminence box seems like a rather odd idea, but I voted for it because of the variety.   I'd probably start with Handley's VW.

What I have of the CPE Bach recordings are very good.  In particular a beautiful recording of Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu (The Ascension of the Heavenly Farts of Jesus).

LOL!  I am glad I am not the only one who makes that verbal connection!

And secondary LOL--I would not start with the Handley, because it's one of the few things in the Eminence box that's a duplicate of something I already own.

I voted CPE, probably predictably. The Perahia box is great but you have tasted of its fruits. Lots of great stuff in the Choral box too.

and the Holy Foreskin was an important relic at one time.  So I don't see the Heavenly Farts as such a stretch.  The church apparently got tired of the giggles and snorts of the infidels:  "In 1900, the Roman Catholic Church resolved the dilemma by ruling that anyone thenceforward writing or speaking of the Holy Prepuce would be excommunicated."  Humorless gits.

I have a  radically Catholic friend online (meaning the kind who would much prefer Vatican II to have never happened,  but grimly lives with the results) to whom I wish, every 1/1  the wish of a Happy Circumcision.  or,  as i once phrased it,  Happy Brit-day,  Jesus!

Listen to them concurrently (discs no.1 from all boxes in turn, then discs no.2, etc.).

North Star

I'd certainly crack that choral works box first.

The variety, (as said before up the page) is what I would do next  ;)

I am about a third of the way through the RCA LS Vol I 50 odd set.  And half way through the Mahler Zinman set.  Both Super Duper Bargain Heads up's from GMG.

Yep, defo the Eminence, but any choice is a winner.  Think I'd do the Bach after the Eminence.

I only have the Perahia, but I voted for it because if you listen to that one, I will go through it with you.  So I guess it doesn't matter when you do it, just say the word.  It will be like Volume Acquisition Support Group.
