Gurn, thank you for starting this thread and posting the BBC obit (there are links to obits on the sites of NPR and The Guardian at the bottom of the BBC article).

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Very sad news indeed. I always loved his Martinu recordings.

Here in Taiwan I just got up. What unfortunate news to start the day.
Thank you Mr. Hogwood, for so many wonderful gifts.
It's all good...

This is truly saddening news. Christopher Hogwood is very easily one of my favorite conductors.

His Beethoven cycle is, for me, definitive. His Mozart Requiem with Emma Kirkby is also, for me, definitive (I only have one quibbles with the entire recording, which is the tempo for the 'Confutatis' movement is a too fast).

He was the one that showed me how pretty this music could be.  Also was nice enough to send me an autograph many moons ago when I emailed him.  RIP
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

It may not be THE cycle for most, but you are missing something awful special without it.

Sad news, and he wasn't even that old by today's standards.

I said it with the passing of Frans Brüggen, but it is even becoming more true now: we are witnessing the end of an era.... :-[

Life is about witnessing the end of eras (and often beginning of new ones). Nostalgia makes one feel old.

Walk in beauty, Maestro.

Such a great thing to say. May he rest in peace.

But I thought life was about witnessing the coming of new eras? 8)

Anyway, we don't need nostalgia to appreciate the contribution these pioneers of the HIP movement made to contemporary practices and standards in Classical music performance.

Hollywood

Very sad news indeed. Hearing his performances on period instruments is, for me, like being transported back to Vienna in the 1780s to a live concert conducted by Mozart himself. We are lucky here in Vienna that every so often there is a concert performed on period instruments and the musicians and conductor are also dressed in period costumes. Dear Christopher Hogwood, you will be missed.  :(

Speechless.
Didn't know about his illness.

May he rest in peace.

Very sad news. I had no idea he was ill. May God rest his soul in peace.

Gadzooks! Presto lists the Hogwood/AAM Haydn box as a new release scheduled for October 27. Same goes for the complete Mozart symphonies.

L'Oiseau Lyre has probably been waiting in the wings for this! That's OK, they needed to be re-released anyway. :)

Nice find Brian - I'm sure that we'll be seeing a number of Hogwood releases in the near future - I have the Mozart and still just one complete Haydn Symphony set (Adam Fischer) + a number of CDs that cover the Nos. 80s to 104; SO, this Hogwood box would be an excellent complement to obtain the pre-80s compositions.  Dave :)

It's like newspapers that keep obituaries on living people ... A bit creepy, but it's good to have the music available.
