Yes, this is real. Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) will direct a movie about Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep) and her partner (Hugh Grant).

This is the best news I've heard all week - as a big fan of Frears, Streep...and Florence. Hearing some of her recordings as a teenager, I was amused and a bit bewildered (and later, compassionate, empathizing with her delusion). Apparently she would rent Carnegie Hall to perform, and people would flock to hear her sing (or "sing"  8)).

I did see the 2005 Broadway play about her, Souvenir, and liked it, but I can imagine Streep doing a spectacular job with the character. And among his many films, I'm a big fan of Stephen Frears's The Grifters (1990).
