Ah, you ARE brilliant Peter! ...

Thanks.

Quote from: Moonfish on December 12, 2014, 04:35:42 PM... What shall you call it? "The birth of 20th century music"?

I like that title.

By the way, I extracted the chicken wings using the Magic Wand tool in my graphics program. I'm letting you know this because I had a little nerdy chuckle when I noticed the "Edge" setting I used (in the Properties section at the bottom of the image):

D'oh! I just figured what the white thing on the cover is. It's sheet music on a stand.

And the guy, I think he might be Boulez!

>:D >:D ;)

Ha! You won't fool us Ken! You cheated and read the cover!!!

I saw this cover and thought "No, no, no, no, no":

Maybe the person who thought that up was thinking of something like this:

But it just doesn't work for Debussy and Ravel.

And to make matters worst that's not even Debussy!

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Eep!

Let's turn that cover upside down, and...

Egad! An interloper.

So who is that on the cover?

Time to investigate.

Give the designer a break - there can't be that many photographs from that time of men with a beard standing upside down.

I'm now determined to find out who our mystery man is.

Here is the right way up*:

And now a search for the identity of Mr. Mystery.

(*What an indignity for a 19th-century musician, to be put upside down on an album cover.)

Wow, the Internet's quick.

Our mystery man is Édouard Manet.

This is the photo that was used:

Thank you, Internet.

No wonder I was certain I had seen the man & the photo before. I really should have recognized him.

And the portrait of 'Ravel', BTW, is actually Leslie Nielsen:

I'm curious: Did you just type "18th century man with a beard" or can you actually search the net for appearances of that particular picture?

It may be that I lack the appropriate tool, but I don't know what I could have done to find that mysterious guy.

That's correct: Google has the 'images search' function: one can upload an image and look for similar ones in Google (by clicking the camera icon to the right).

The Google Chrome browser also has a mighty helpful function: If you right-click on any image in a web page, you can select "Search Google for this image". It'll then see if it can find a match*.

Considering the people involved, I think it's only fair that we update the text on the cover:
