My friend Cato has recently written (and has just sent me a copy) a brilliant essay about the state of modern western society and he has cited some phenomenal literature in building his arguments (with which I concur).  What a pleasure to read his thought-provoking and perceptive analyses of the modern 'predicament', written with a strong historical perspective (alliteration intended) and illuminated with devastating prose.

I mention this because the internet has provided me with a few excellent correspondents, both now and in the past, and in a landscape of (frequently) chronic mediocrity, mindless babble, active aggression and terminal dullness this is quite an achievement!!
