Just to let all of the people here on GMG that I befriended know that I have decided to delete my Facebook account. I've become quite dissatisfied with the whole social network thing and have actually grown quite tired of it. I will continue to post here of course as I still see this forum as a viable way to talk about music.

Congrats. I have a "Public Figure" page, but that's it. In a sense I regret that I even established that. LinkedIn IMO is even worse for a variety of reasons.

Welcome to the club! I deleted mine in 2008 (Junior year in high school) and haven't looked back. I thought I was spending too much time on it. While I think I spend too much time on GMG (almost 3000 posts in roughly 1.5 years YIKES :'(), I learn enough new things to easily justify it.

I've down scaled my social networking to a large extent too, although that has extended to my whole online presence. I've still three(?) domain names registered, all of which im told now have simple holding pages courtesy of my *webby guy who looked after my sites and blog for years. I no longer see much of any need for me to have them.
I'm sure Facebook will get along just fine without me actively contributing my thoughts, opinions, and random meanderings.

Well, since the social media for me are in part a matter of musical networking, I do not foresee deleting my Facebook account (nor even Twitter, which frankly, I do not find particularly useful) anytime soon.  Indeed, part of my contribution to our new Triad choral composers endeavor is, that I "manage" the Facebook page and the Twitter feed.  I admit, this has made even Twitter a little more fun.

I never had a FB account because the whole model isn't suited to me and what I want out of life, but I like my Twitter account OK, since it allows me to do a lot of musical networking. I've met innumerable people with shared interests, and can take or leave the many others with whom I cross paths. It's only 140 characters, after all... :)

Never had one (nor Twitter for that matter).  ;D

I've always enjoyed Twitter – trying to express myself in 140 characters makes for a nice writing exercise. I'm following just about thirty people I find interesting / their tweets wortwhile, e.g. William Gibson, Elif Batuman, Alex Ross or the ever-inspiring Hilary Hahn's violin case.

Joining Twitter seems like a pretty cool idea, but I don't think I could keep up with doing tweets on a regular basis. Plus, I hardly ever have anything interesting to say as I'm such a bore. :D

There is really no pressure to perform there. Find performers you like and follow them. If you post some things you are listening to, inevitably people with similar tastes will find you and favorite you, and you can favorite them back, or not. I post a couple of time in the evening, and then when I blog an essay I put a link there, like I do here. Otherwise, it's just finding something you like and seeing what they have to say. Very laid back, which is why I like it.  :)

It certainly seems like a cool idea. I may create one at some point, but right now I'm only tinkering with the idea as FB was what I feel a major step forward in eliminating the unnecessary in my life.

I'm addicted to Twitter, I follow 357 accounts and have 87 followers. If I post it's mostly retweeting something or posting pics of my son for my family and friends to see, but I love the quick info that is relayed through Twitter. I follow various accounts from news organizations, musicians, artists, writers, comedians, friends other random ones. But Twitter to me doesnt seem as personal as Facebook, which is my biggest gripe with the latter. I do have a FB account, but I use it more for keeping in contact with friends and family that are a distance away from me geographically. And I only have around 30 "friends", I normally drop those that use FB on an hour by hour basis to update the world on what they're eating or what their personal and political views are. I don't have a problem with that, but I just don't want to use FB in that manner. Now I do have my Instagram and Twitter accounts linked to FB so if I post a pic it will automatically post it in FB as well.
I have seen businesses and artists utilize FB in a very positive way, mostly by reaching out to a larger audience and having the resources to instantly update pics, info and links .

I keep FB as a way of keeping in touch with family and former coworkers. I rarely post, just comment and hit the like button when my cousin posts pictures of her grandkids.
