This is really a great record (I'm callin' them "records" these days!  :P ) ). Mine is the original LP, with great sound quality and nearly silent surfaces after a cleaning with the Keith Monks machine.

I have some of her later recordings, but, naturally her voice is a bit higher here, but no less enjoyable. The material ranges from lighthearted and funny "Loads of love" to poignant ("Ten cents a dance"). Really a must-have for lovers of great vocal recordings.

Shirley Horn is one of my favorite jazz vocalists. Such a pure, emotionally vulnerable, heart-warming voice.

Yes, agreed, she's up there on my list--not quite as high as the Divine One (Sarah Vaughan).

Lately, I've been enjoying Abbey Lincoln too, although I must admit I didn't like her at first. Her cover of the song "Should've been" is priceless IMO.

From my RVG project:
I've thought about doing a "desert island producer" poll where you can only take one producer's work with you to the desert island, with Alfred Lion, Norman Granz, Teo Macero, Bob Weinstock, Orrin Keepnews, etc.

Heard this great recording on the radio today--added to wish list. My collection is woefully lacking in Ben Webster--not for long!

One of my favorite Miles records.  I remember when it first came out, I loved it but all my friends (other jazz players) put it down.  I didn't care; I would leave it on 24/7; just there all the time.  Still love it.  The On the Corner Complete Sessions is great, too.

Can you please tell me what you like about it? And/or what I must be missing?

Any album where Ben Webster joins forces with Coleman Hawkins, Harry Edison, Johnny Hodges, or Oscar Peterson is essential!

- Ben & Sweets
- Sweets
- Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster
- Blues-a-Plenty
- Not So Dukish
- Ben Webster and Oscar Peterson

I want to hear the collabo album with Joe Zawinul and Philly Joe Jones, too...

Re Webster/Tatum: the edition depicted above is one of the many euro PD reissues ... Tatum is amazing ad I think both the Pablo Solo and Group Masterpieces boxes are still available (the later of which, as its crown, containing the album with Webster - the LPs were initially released on Verve but Granz took them with him and reissued them al on Pablo, later Fantasy made two boxes and those were again reprinted bby Universal Italia).

Other than that, Brian's list is good, you cN add "Soulville" to it (again with Peterson). And I also really love the 1965 Copenhagen live recordings with the Kenny Drew Trio! (Three sets on three LPs, later on two CDs with the middle set split up).
