I've been listening to albums by the Vietnamese-origin trumpeter Cuong Vu for over ten years, and I've come to expect the unexpected from him. The one who truly surprised me on this recording, though, was Pat Metheny, sounding fresh and adventurous.

A couple of days ago I stumbled across a recent IG photo of Keith Jarrett taken at his home. It hit me pretty hard. Then I remembered Rick Beato's video from there as well. It just feels really sad... He looks so frail now. Knowing how insanely brilliant he was at the piano, and now seeing him like that, it just hurts.

Chris Potter - Into Africa (from 'Alive With Ghosts Today')

Chris Potter's Alive With Ghosts Today brings together Bill Frisell, Nate Smith and Burniss Travis with Rane Moore (clarinet), Zekkereya El-Magharbel (trombone) and Sara Caswell (violin) in a deliberately off-centre ensemble that places Potter's tenor and soprano inside a textured, human-scale sound world. Written around the story of abolitionist John Brown and the 1859 raid on Harper's Ferry, the album confronts a moment that exposed deep fractures at the heart of the American narrative.

"It's a story that holds the complexity and tragedy of America in one moment," Potter says. "It felt important to engage with it now."
