That Richardson is mighty fine!

Not too big on Gene Harris/The Three Sounds, though ... but "Blue Hour" with Stanley Turrentine is a classic!

As light and undemanding as they often are, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Three Sounds.

now:

Red Garland - All Kinds of Weather (1958)

Yeah, but I found it pretty dull ... but then some of the albums again aren't half bad, Donald Bailey on drums is always worth hearing - on the expanded "Live at the Lighthouse" disc.

Red Garland is another case though ... love his playing and can easily go through several hours of his mid/late fifties trios without ever being bored!

I've never heard of Sonny Red, but wow, that is a heck of a group he's with.

The critics seem to have liked that album much more than I did on my first listen. I'll have to give it another try in the near future.

now:

Ken McIntyre - Stone Blues (1960)
Lem Winchester - Another Opus (1960)

Ken McIntyre and Eric Dolphy - Looking Ahead (1960)
Oliver Nelson and Lem Winchester - Nocturne (1960)

Red has a tone that certainly won't appeal to everyone ... I kinda like him but would never consider him a favourite. The Blue Note  album has some cool tunes though and I always enjoy Wynton Kelly, that's for sure! There's more Redd on Riverside/Jazzland, with the likes of Blue Mitchell and Grant Green (the CD twofer by Fantasy played with colours in its title), and one co-led with Clifford Jordan (on another twofer by Fantasy, that one also contains Jordan's fine "Mosaic" with Kenny Dorham). Guess that Jordan twofer would be ny next (and fully endorsed) recommendation. There's also a pretty good (not great) recent disc on Uptown presenting a live show by the Red/Mitchell group from the sixties.

Pieranunzi is like the Italian Bill Evans. Such a tasteful player.
