I found this piece on YouTube not too long ago and was immediately enthralled by it. Such excellent music, and so neglected! I searched around but it looks like there is no recording of it...but wait: one of the comments claim that there has been. Curious indeed. Does anyone here know of any recording of this piece? I'd love to find one.

Possibly the recording on YouTube was from a live performance: the group Musica Varia seems to be from Tuebingen, Germany.  I also could  find no available recording.

Here is the score:

Looking on the streaming services, I see 6 Piano Trios, a Piano Quintet Op. 145, a Clarinet Quintet, a Wind Quintet in E-flat major, a Septet, an Octet, a Nonet, but no String Quintet op. 121.  There are also symphonies, a Requiem, and a Mass in F major.  Does CPO know about this guy?

As cpo has issued music by composers more obscure than Lachner, I bet they know about him. But they can't record everything and if another label already started with e.g. the quartets of Franz and Ignaz Lachner one could probably not expect to sell another recording of that stuff.

I did hopefully check labels such as CPO and Toccata Classics but to no avail. I currently have his quartets, a septet, an octet and a nonet by him (plus some odd symphonies) but had no idea there were piano trios of his recorded. I'd be very interested in that, too.

Guess I'll keep looking around and see if a label picks up this piece at some point in time.

Thank you for mentioning who this thread is about,

The YouTube performance of the String Quintet sounds like it may be from a recording from some decades ago.  I cannot find a reference to it yet.  If it is the same group, Musica Varia has a website offering 6 CD's, but this work is not offered.  The group goes back to 1988.

I had heard of Franz Lachner from Harold Schoenberg's book The Great Conductors, but this is the first I've heard of his music.  Lovely, kind of a cross between Schubert and Mendelssohn. :)

It sounds the same to me, as well. Looks like it was probably just a one-off radio performance by the group. A shame really.

I thought the same thing! It's what made me so interested in his music in the first place, but this one most particularly.
