He's 19 - he's off at college becoming mad about girls.

We will never see him . . . again.   :blank:
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

Actually, if Daniel doesn't mind me divulging some personal information: he's got a girlfriend and looks genuinely happy. Also he conducts his own orchestra called the Watford Youth Sinfonia and I believe he still plays percussion in another youth symphony. If this wasn't enough, he's a composer and goes to music school, so, yes, there's plenty of things to keep him occupied. 8)

Funny you should point that out.. our composition task this year really frustrated me.... 'to write a piece using only 4 pitches for one instrument and two found objects'.... and by found objects, I mean saucepans and frying pans and so forth.. it was not fun. >:D ::) So, compositionally, Manchester doesn't look too promising for me I have to say.... Apart from that, I'm just bored. Not enough to keep me preoccupied which is not helpful when you're missing all the happiness back home..

Mad About Mahler!  Beware: such idiotic teachers will drive you insane!   ??? ??? ???

Ridiculous assignment!  $:) ;)

I am reminded of the following anecdote: the novelist Sinclair Lewis was once invited to a university to give a talk to aspiring writers.

He began with: "If you're writers, why are you here listening to me?  Get out of here, go home, and write something!"   0:)

My training was autodidactic: I had the luck to receive answers to my letters on composition, serialism, etc. from Alexander Tcherepnin.  This is not to say that university programs in Music are not worth your time, but that perhaps you have not found the right one for you. e.g. Karl Henning seems to have been satisfied (I believe) with his university programs in Music.
