There have been many evil, twisted crimes committed by human beings.  But this (sadly becoming all too common) assault begs for punishment in the public square.  This must be the 7th or 8th time now that there has been a news item of this type in the past 5 years.   

Not every crime is due to 'mental illness' - most of the time it's just plain evil.

I am sure some politicians would love to bring back the stocks--perhaps along with public executions/stoning/caning, debtor's prison, and the like--just like our beloved allies, the Saudis, whom so many of our politicians seem to worship. (and, then out of the other side of their mouths, they will condemn Russia, China, North Korea, Iran over human rights violations)

While I am far from a pacifist, I also think that this type of brutality is not going to be solved with more brutality, and agree that incarceration is not a cure for mental illness.
