You'd da man Orbital!
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Oh, dear, I'm gone for a day and the thread has expanded by a half? Wow, impressive. Only catch is that now I'm completely lost - don't know which quiz is which, who answered whom etc. etc. But I'll go back and slowly read through all of the posts, I promise. For the time being, I've gathered that there's still one of mine left unanswered, so I'm adding an additional shot to the old one.

The first film is sometimes called a classic in its genre though it has lost a lot of its charm over the years

And no one cares for that great long Zanussi interview (even if the sound isn't perfect)? Or the Bunuel page I posted earlier? C'mon people, I'm giving you the best I got and all you do is frown? This awkward silence is really getting to me... :-\

Another hint to these shots: The director worked with Hitchcock early in his career. The director's son played in this movie - but it's not him on the picture.

Kullervo

Maciek, I think we're all completely stumped. Has anyone any ideas for my one and two yet? I swear they're from actual movies this time! ;D

No ideas really. If the poster in the first film was in Italian, I'd throw in a guess for Cinema Paradiso.

And for the second one... Titanic?  ;D ;D

Maciek

First of all, oops!, a correction: the director's son is not the guy in the shot.

As an apology, here are two more hints and two more stills. The director's son had a squint and he is featured on one of the following shots. These are from other places in the movie, not from the sequence that De Palma was alluding to.

Well, if the first one was a poster for Bunuel's Ensayo de un crimen, I'd know. But since this is something else, I'm guessing: EspĂritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive)?? No, I have no idea, frankly...

Kullervo

Spirit of the Beehive is correct! Here are some more photos of Spirit just for the heck of it, and 2 more hints for number 2.

Kullervo

1. Spirit of the Beehive (Maciek)
2. ?
4. Murder, My Sweet (Bogey)
5. Colour of Pomegranates (Drasko)
6. That Obscure Object of Desire (Drasko)
7. Pickpocket (Orbital)

Apparently, this is something about Sindbad, starring our own MozartMobster:

Unfortunately, I don't know his full filmography... :(

Maciek, the images from your number 1 are so striking that anyone who has seen it would have been able to name it by now. Tell us!!  :D

The same can be said for my number 2, John Boorman's Zardoz, a film that invariably appears on lists of the worst films ever, and could have been a career-killer for both Boorman and Connery. I actually really like this film, and not in an ironic way. For me it's pure entertainment. :)

This should give you an idea of the wackiness of this movie. ;D

Maciek

Hm, might give it a try, don't know - it does have that useless quality that can be entertaining if you're not subjected to it too often... ;D

Anyway, the answer to mine is:

The movie De Palma payed homage to in Mission: Impossible was Topkapi, directed by Jules Dassin. And the actor in question was Joe Dassin (the one with the moustache). It's a French movie set in Turkey so I thought someone from our international crew would know it... On the other hand, I've only seen it once and quite a while ago, and don't think I would recognize those shots if someone showed them to me. ;D

Do we have all the answers to M Forever's quiz? Who's next? Me? Does it have to be? :P Oh, OK, if that's what you say... ::) :P :P

This time I'll take this in a slightly new direction. What's the new limit? 6? Fine. Here goes:

I 'd never have recognized Joe Dassin with a moustache. So that is Melina Mercouri on the right, then ?

cx

I think 2 is Night of the Living Dead
