There's a significant number of 20th-century British composers who died in years ending with 6, hence this year we commemorate significant anniversaries.

George Butterworth (1916)
Edward German (1936)
Granville Bantock (1946)
Gerald Finzi (1956)
Benjamin Britten (1976)
Edmund Rubbra (1986)
Malcolm Arnold (2006)

And unfortunately of course we can now add Peter Maxwell Davies (2016) to this list.

I was definitely saddened to hear of Peter Maxwell Davies' passing. He mentioned his health in the last interview I saw of him, but that he was feeling better and better. I had my fingers crossed he would continue to produce more terrific music, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. :(

His second and third symphonies are favourites of mine.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).
