The purpose of the thread is, as was stated in the OP:

The post goes on at length: Coffee is nothing if not prolix! :)  However, in all the verbiage, there is nothing at all which solicits recommendations for obscure new works which one may not have heard. Essentially, the thread is intended to spotlight works which have stood the test of time and become classics. Presumably, those with the highest ratings are the ones which one should least wish to miss hearing.

A good point.

There's more. Coffee was asked about the methodology, and explained his plan - experiment really - at some length. The idea of tiers was central to the purpose of the thread. There was a back and forth between several posters on the topic.

Personally I think the result is pretty interesting. The top tiers contain good examples for newbies of the kind of thing that gets people like us hooked on classical music, and the lower tiers some stuff new to pretty much everyone here -- I doubt even many GMGers know every piece listed.

Of course La Mer belongs on no list but nothing is fool-proof.  ;)

Why the La Mer hate though?

Ah well, that's partly a running joke. La Mer is good music, but I find it a tad dull and over-praised. Like Seinfeld.

Ah, I see. I must however say that you're WRONG.

I wouldn't know about Seinfeld though.

I cannot stand the conflict, so I am out. Maybe this is a hissy-fit meltdown. But it's not like this is out of nowhere. This has been going on too long. Why can't we just tolerate each other? Just compromise? Everything is ruined. Why not just tolerate each other? I am so disgusted, so tired, so disappointed, so sad. So sad. This thread didn't need to be a part of it. I wish it hadn't come here. Maybe someday, somewhere, a project like this can happen without the same conflicts that have infected so many other innocent, potentially helpful, potentially interesting things regarding classical music. I'm so sorry. This is my fault. I wish I could have avoided this conflict appearing here.

I know we all wish everyone agreed with us, but in the absence of that, why can't we at least be decently nice to each other? I mean, it's not as if land and wealth were at stake. It's music. It's supposed to be something that makes all the crappiness of the world less horrible. Instead we turn it into part of the crappiness.

Don't let my gripes get in the way if your fun. I'm vastly in the minority here. Most of the people here want this kind of thing. It's just not for me. I had the mistaken idea that this was going to go somewhere else. And I thought I should voice my opinion before I stopped posting here. Then for some reason Ken (EDIT: GB) got involved but that's just what he does. If everyone gave up when he started whining this whole forum would be barren. I think you should continue if you're still up to it. You're always gonna find someone who doesn't agree but there's no hard feeling coming from here.

You might want to consider getting rid of my recommendations from the list though. I feel like I was trying to push something that no one really wanted.

Again, man, room for everyone. Including you. And people who disagree with you. If both sides were able to tolerate each other's existence, we'd be fine. But you're not, so we're not.

Coffee, I am so sorry for the derailing of your thread. I hope you'll continue on if you have the interest. It would be a shame to lose enthusiasm over it in this way. Either way, you worked hard on it and that deserves some recognition. Happy holidays!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

tKeep up the good work. I finr it interesting to see what people recommend (and the list is interesting)  even though I don't contribute. If I  expected something else, I  would either start my own thread, or disregard the thread. Such is the nature of things on the net, and people should respect that.

I'm glad to see that some people are still voting. I'm not sure what to do. I really like the idea of this project but I would rather it not exist than for it to become yet another occasion for the same violence that has ruined classical music discussion all over the internet in the past few years. Maybe there's a way to prevent that. I will think about it.

Maybe the best thing if more arguing happens, ignore it. The vote is the important part, not the complaints, correct? So long as people aren't disrupting deliberately with their votes, you don't have to give them the attention. And also as the moderator you can simply omit someone's vote anyway if it happens.

So I will continue to add votes...

Maybe a separate thread for nonvoting commentary/complaint?

Perhaps you could discuss with a moderator? They might have suggestions and alternatives. Although separate threads might be easier to police, I'm not sure it makes for a better experience.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!
