So Amazon opened up a new service today by which Prime members can add certain tracks or albums to their Playlist for free,  much like their instant video program.

Has anyone else looked at this? Any must-have recordings available for "free"?

The symphony side of things is a bit underrepresented,  but any suggestions of great recordings of anything would be appreciated.

There are very few classical music on amazon prime at this moment.

Harold Budd's recent albums are very nice.

I want to check these when I have time.

I just took a look at this for the first time, and the classical section lists 908 albums worth of material.  There's a lot of fluff, but also some decent fare.  I grabbed Beecham's Mozart Requiem and Copland conducting Copland already, and there's some Gieseking, Gilels, Casals, etc.  Selecting the titles adds them to the Amazon Cloud Player, which allows for download later.  The only downside for me is that I very rarely - never, really - listen to anything using Amazon Cloud Player.

I believe you cannot download the prime music albums. You can listen to them only on Amazon music player.

I am listening to the string quartets of Philip Glass by Kronos Quartet.

Then I will use it even less than I would have otherwise, though additional snooping did result in some interesting finds - some Jordi Savall discs, for instance.

Which makes it a similar service to Spotify with a fraction of the content.

Yes, at least for classical. I see it as a bit of a gimmick. Amazon boosted the price of Prime. I use it a lot, and replaced Netflix, so I will probably keep it when I have to renew, but the music won't be a factor unless they boost it significantly.

I'm with you Ken.  I like the streaming, I like the 2 day shipping.  Have not much interest in the music at the moment, and don't like the selection on the Kindle lending library.

Yeah that is a REAL disappointment. One book in 7 months. They really should improve that.

It's getting better. Bernstein Century series, Copland, many HDC albums, Beethoven complete symphonies by Toscanini, Wispelwey's Bach cello suites, Stockhausen Stimmung, ...
