I've built quite an extensive collection of contemporary female s&s...

The second Monk tribute album ever recorded.

I simply can't get enough of Fiona's music. I've built quite an extensive collection of contemporary female s&s recently but none of them hit the spot like she does. There is something about her music that is totally captivating  ::).
I just picked up a Dual Disc version of this for 25 cents at a library sale!

Hehe, a friend of mine plays this one a lot - it's neat :)

Yes, indeed. I bet he/she owns some Stranglers as well.  8)

Probably, they do have a lot - but I'm not sure I've heard that band to be able to recognise them. She tends to go for anything obscure and early 80s, such as The Pagans.

The Stranglers weren't really obscure.  You may (or may not of course!) recall massive hits like "Golden Brown", "Skin Deep" and "Always the Sun".

Far milder than the afore-mentioned Griffin cuts, but always musical.

One day, I'd like to research the history of tribute albums to Lady Day.

Kevin - I'm shocked!  :D  I've completely 'missed' this guy despite a fairly thorough jazz collection -  ::)

So, if I had to start w/ a couple of recordings, what would be your first two recommendations - the 'mellow' disc w/ strings would be a choice for me, BTW - others, please?

Amazingly, the guy lived to be 80 and just died last year from my 'googling'!  Thanks - Dave  :)

First of all, relax. Your googling did NOT kill the guy!! :)

One of the famous Chicago tenors, he's consistently good. I'd recommend The Congregation on Blue Note and certainly one of the albums he cut when with Monk. A Blowing Session features him with Coltrane and Mobley (but though their styles are very different, I'll leave it to you if an album with three tenors is the best way to get acquainted with one of them).

Have you heard Von Freeman? He's another tenor mainstay from my hometown and still with us.

I hear ya, bro. It's cool, it's sexy, it's original, got great bass lines, confrontational lyrics, and accompanied by piano. She's got it all. And she's a Virgo.  8)
I agree with all that except I'm not sure the music is sexy. One thing I've come to notice about Apple is her ability to change the whole mood of the song in a second. That comes both from her songwriting capabilities, but also from her singing technique. Sucn asin "Get Gone" when she says "F..kin go  ;D" and the whole mood is suddenly transformed.

Me, I am once again amazed at how much more ass Zeppelin kicks live! Unbelievable!! My socks flew across the room.  ;D
You do have the BBC Sessions right?

A Depeche Mode day was scheduled to celebrate their gig this evening (it got canceled though). Still, playing their last 5 albums on rotation.

I am not a big fan of their albums before these. Violator, maybe.

karlhenning

Offhand, I'm not sure I know even a single tune of their'n.

I do. It didn't nearly leave the strong impression that How the West Was Won did.
