Well said my friend.  Now, as a chaser:

Hey! You're supposed to take Miles straight, no chaser.

Yes, early Louis w/ Joe Oliver - I've had that Milestone disc for a while, and wish the 'sound transfers' were better; Bill - that 2-CD set interests me, also, but the comments from the Amazonians are so varied w/ a couple of legitimate 'negative' reviews - might just wait for some 'newer' releases of that material?

One reason is that these old recordings can be drastically improved!  A good example are the 1928 Sessions of Mississippi John Hurt - started out w/ a cassette (on a trip w/ my son to MS in the '80s - we went through Avalon, where Hurt had lived), then bought the Yazoo CD, maybe another CD, but finally the one shown below was released, and the sonics were just amazingly improved compared to the 'crappy' Yazoo production - not to 'hijack' this 'Joe Oliver' post, but those interested in Hurt, click on the image -  :D

Cleaning up the sound on these historic recordings can help, but sometimes it also affects the dynamics of the original. Some would rather have some excess noise if it means getting to hear a more faithful reproduction of the original 78. A matter of personal taste, I guess.

dtwilbanks and Dave,

Here are listening samples of Just Gone from each of these cds....the sound does vary IMO, but thought it might be fun to compare....

I have to say that I enjoyed the Milestone one more, but not by too much.......its just that completest mentality in me that is making the decision so difficult.  Reviews of the Milestone cd warns of over filtering....the "complete set" does not receive steller marks either....I see your point here Dave.  Well gentlemen, it looks like I will flip a coin or go ahead and start purchasing some, what are probably very expensive, 78's. :)

Update:

Just located this one and reviews seems positive....sound sample of Just Gone below the cd cover::

Bill,

Lucky for me, I'm not that picky about recording quality. If the music is strong enough, I don't notice the noise much.

Bill - that 2-CD set above looks good! Stellar reviews except for a 1* (can't really understand his problem w/ all of the other superb comments?  ???) - on my laptop this morn, but will try to find some snippets (and the one you included) when I get to a desktop computer w/ some decent speakers - thanks.  Dave

Agreed....I do not so much mind the snap, crackle, and pops (I actually enjoy these) as much as I care about whether the music has itself been diminished.  That is why I usually like the Pearl transfers for classical....they are what they are, with what seems to be, at most, subtle filtering.

Not sure myself here Dave....the background noise seems to be almost too "uniformed"....almost an airbrush effect, if you will.  I will have to listen more.  By the way, the samples for this last one can be found on the Tower Records web page.  They are absent on Amazon.

Thanks for reminding me. Some Pearl recordings are in my future methinks.  ;D
