Tonight for our 'dinner music' put on a couple of Ellis Marsalis discs - not HOT jazz but just enjoyable -  :D

Last April I saw Ellis live at Snug Harbor in New Orleans--just marvelous.  As you say, not "hot" (in the sense of "lots of activity") but still, great to hear him.

Victoire: Cathedral City - This group of five ladies is headed by composer Missy Mazzoli, and the recording is a bit hard to describe.  It's sort of classical, sort of minimal, sort of jazz...but doesn't seem to fit into any category.  Nevertheless, strangely compelling.

Hi Bruce - we saw Ellis in NO a number of years ago - and for our 'dinner music' prefer some mellowness while eating -  ;D

We've also seen Branford & Wynton (not together) in Winston-Salem over the years - a remarkable family, IMO - probably have a half dozen or more discs of Wynton (including the one suggested by MI) - will put on a couple for our next meal -  :D

Have a wonderful holiday season in the Big Apple - years ago when my in-laws still lived in Short Hills, NJ, we would visit w/ our young son (who is now 37 y/o!) at this time of the year, and go into NYC on Christmas day (they are Jewish) - Fifth Avenue was the place to walk and eat off the streets - chestnuts, as I remember - is it still the same?  Dave  :)

I didn't know that Maniac Butcher had reformed, but it seems that they have also released a new album. They sound just as fun as ever - absolutely no frills, and a mercifully short 30 mins album length (the cardinal sin of many metal bands is not knowing when to stop). Pleasantly organic fuzzy production with decent depth, nice instrument balance and fun little guitar doodles every now and again betraying the fundimental thrash influence in black metal, but without compromising the olden-style punky energy. No really amazing songs, just good stuff. The song titles are all in incomprehensible Czech as usual, adding to the appeal given how random it looks to western European eyes.

A fine record by all accounts. Probably one of my favorite Gordon recordings along with Go!

Nice, George. A lesser man wouldn't have admitted that on a public forum.
