Bruckner 4th ...

Are also some fine things in Britten´s Serenade, for example.

I voted for Das Rheingold, but would add Ein Heldenleben, its still an amazing opening lick for the horns, even though the horn line is shared in unison with the cellos and basses.

Relatedly, Till Eulenspiegel is a good candidate for Favorite Right After the Opening Horn Call!

For sure the Humperdinck. What a beautiful opening, and the horn lasts a lot longer than many horn openings. And the theme is important. But ultimately, it goes directly to the soul and touches it like few pieces do. It's music that demands I stop and listen. So I do! :)

Absolutely. Strauss loved making horn players sweat.

Voted for Mahler 3 here, but another one I like is at the beginning of Messiaen's Des canyons aux étoiles...

Damn hard choice. I love the Mahler 3, Bruckner 4, Wagner, Humperdinck, Sibelius 5. Rather than choosing from among those, I'll go with "other": Haydn Symphony No. 31 in D major "Hornsignal"

There's also Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra finale.

With a little bit of stretching the definition of "horn," I'll throw in Mahler's Seventh.

Brahms PC2.

I remember the opening horn call more than I remember the piano part.

Arguably the two best parts of that concerto are the horn solo and the cello solo!

I love the whole piece but I couldn't disagree!

I voted for the Brahms.

Other: Haydn Symphony Nr. 31

Favorite horn calls within a piece: Brahms' 1st, finale  "Alphorn" passage, Strauss Don Juan "big horn theme" in the middle (this must also qualify as horny considering the subject matter, although not as much as Rosenkavalier)
