Sammy

We are going to select 30 keyboard works for an eventual voting game.  The basic selection requirement is that the work be a complete one.  Parts of complete works such as Claire de Lune are not allowed; if it has a mom, it doesn't count.  Also, groupings of complete works do not count, so Bach's English Sutes (6) would not be allowed.  Of course, there will be times when the lines are blurred, so I'll likely be making a few semi-executive decisions.  No works for solo organ.

Selection Rules:

1.  You may select one or two works on a daily basis.

2.  Once you have selected a particular work, you may not pick that work again - it's one and done.

3.  If and when that work is selected by two fellow game participants, it will be game ready.

My two picks for today:

Bach - Goldberg Variations
Haydn - Piano Sonata no. 58

San Antone

Liszt - Sonata in B minor
Ravel - Gaspard de la nuit

Mahlerian

So what about WTC book1/book2?

Almost forgot to answer the above question.  Bach's WTC is my favorite music, period.  What I would do is select - WTC (complete).  However, some might prefer Bk. 1 being a separate entry than Bk. 2.  For voting purposes, I think each book would suffer if entered as 2 works.

If one book of the Well-tempered Clavier counts as "one" piece, than all six Partitas by Bach should also. Or Beethoven's op.10 or op.31. I think this gives an unwelcome advantage to such collections.

Would you treat the prelude and fugue in C major of Bk. 1 as one complete work?

Florestan

I think large collections should be treated as one work only if originally published as such. For instance, WTC Bk I should be different than WTC Bk II and so should be the three years of Annees de pelerinages.

That is a sensible rule which, as usual, will produce some anomalous results. The 6 Partitas were published separately, so they are distinct. But do we really consider a set of three Beethoven Piano Sonatas a single work because they were published together? Probably we need to incorporate some discretion, making the rule "published together and forming an indivisible whole." The WTC seems be be "indivisible" to some extent, since spanning all of the keys is the point of it. But that is a grey area. It is hard to compare works that vary so widely in scope.

Up to Bulldog, of course.

Semi-executive decisions:

1.  Bach's WTC Bk. 1 is one work; Bk. 2 is one work.  Separating them really goes against the grain but I'm doing this as a compromise.

2.  The same applies to the 3 parts of Liszt's Annees.....

Too bad about the WTC since it will split the vote for what would otherwise be a very competitive work.  There is such a thing as overthinking these games.

Not blaming you, Sammy; you were just responding to the rabble.
