Hey guys, i've frequented this site a bit the last few weeks but just decided to go ahead and make an account and start contributing to the discussion a little. Im a senior at dutch fork high in columbia SC, played in band from 6th-10th grade (saxophone, bassoon, baritone) but decided to make the switch to vocal to preform with our chamber choir and broadway choir. I've been in music all my life (both parents church music directors) and have a great passion for it and plan to follow suite and go to USC (south car) to major in music and get a minor in graphic design. Im pretty much a Mozart, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovitch, Bernstein, Bach, and Beethoven addict (yeah the classic, but i love 'em) and currently im stuck on Charles Camille Saint-Saƫns - Danse Macabre.

So yeah, see you all around the boards.

Welcome, and yes indeed, those composers are highly addictive.

Ever tried Mahler, or Bruckner? ;)

I might not have been in this forum for longer than a week myself, but welcome, regardless! ;D

Mahler is my favourite composer: I tip everyone about him. I'd even likely tip Mahler himself on the street, if I met him (and he was alive, etc.)! :P

And I also think both of those composers are well worth the initial trouble one might have approaching them. And if you're running out of ideas, liner notes and/or recordings, snoop around the forum; there are tons of recommendations (and debates on those) to be found, for that duo. 8)

so i see. Ill deff. pick something of his up from what i've heard so far.

SC Singer - BIG welcome to the GMG Forum - hope that you enjoy & find much of interest here!  :)

I'm up the road in Winston-Salem, NC (some good music programs in this state, also) - I've been to Columbia a couple of times - toured the State Capitol building (beautiful) & really enjoyed the State Museum!   8)

LOL that's an understatement considering you're right there at the NC School of Arts. Depending on how things go this next year i *might* be applying for the school...dont know yet. And im glad you enjoyed Columbia, too bad you couldnt have seen the Philharmonic, it was the conductors (Nicholas Smith) last year last season so we're all waiting anxiously to see who the new candidates are. Im nervous because our school has done numerous events with the Philharmonic under Mr. Nicholas's supervision and that might not be the case this year. Oh well, yeah it's a bit selfish, but oh well  ;D

Welcome,  scsinger01. If you are a music major, you will probably have no difficulties finding Mahler and Bruckner wonderful. To fully appreciate their music, deep understanding of music theory is needed...and I'm glad you already have what it takes :)

For a moment there I thought you were talking about the University of Southern California (USC) but after reading your intro again you probably meant the University of South Carolina. I am from Los Angeles originally and that's why I automatically jumped to the conclusion that you were talking about the Uni of SoCal. Sorry about that... ;D
