Why would they gain more points? Schoenberg is one of the most popular composers of the 20th century with hundreds of thousands of fans around the world (and they are proportionately high on GMG). Also, because the name 'Schoenberg' is so incredibly significant in music history and theory I would suspect that his quartets are justifiably famous anyway and people would come to enjoy his music for what it is already knowing at least something about the composer who wrote it and his importance to music generally. The third quartet is my favourite of his and it has come very far in the game already. I haven't really been voting for it because I know Schoenberg has many more fans here than Nono and Ferneyhough do.

I think it's the name that drives some people away, though.  They don't realize that Schoenberg's music, at its best as it is in all four of his quartets, is taut, lyrical, driven, and emotionally powerful.  Despite his popularity relative to many composers of the era, he remains misunderstood by many.

All four of his String Quartets are masterpieces (I prefer them to any of Bartok's or Shostakovich's, and they fared far better), and it's extremely unfortunate that only one made it to the next round.

I don't think that unfortunate at all. Having more than one Schoenberg quartet in the final round would dilute the pot, divide votes. Having only one gives it a better chance to win (although odds are still against it). Anyway, that's one reason I  didn't vote for Arnie in this round. Besides, the Weinberg is a magnificent quartet too and definitely deserved my votes even when it was a hopeless cause. Also sad to see Ives defeated by another Haydn.

The last three picks for the final round:

Bartók - String Quartet no. 5, Sz 102
Beethoven - String Quartet no. 14 in C sharp minor, op. 131
Haydn - String Quartet in B flat major, op. 76/4 "Sunrise"

Come join me for the finals which will start in about 30 minutes!!

It would have been nice to see one more Schoenberg work through to the next stage, but since only one modern was going to make it I would have preferred to see Ives over Bartók this round. I think the 20th century did pretty well all told; all three major Second Viennese School composers are represented, plus two Carters, two Bartóks, Sibelius, Ravel, Zemlinsky, Myaskovsky. They will be outnumbered in the final, but at least they made it.
