Symphony No 1 in D major Op 52 ('From my Homeland').
Symphony No 2 in E flat major Op 55.

See back cover for details.

For me these works were always something special, music that makes my heart beat faster, and opens up whole fiestas of colour and melodies, tantalizing to one's senses. SOTA sound and sublime performance.

After Kalinnikov and Balakirev, he should definitely be your next stop.

Quote from: DavidW on March 06, 2024, 12:16:24 PMYes.  But that naughty label (Archipel) is on all the streaming services.  I found an old thread here and another on cmg indicating it was one of the ones that are pretty well known for pirating and selling music they don't actually own the copyright to, possibly stealing other peoples transfers as well.  The streaming services don't seem to care.

And there's Urania, Alexander Bok, and many others.  They often take adavantage of "official" releases by putting their own needle drops up.  Just a cash grab.

Quote from: DavidW on March 06, 2024, 08:52:04 AMYeah it is on Qobuz, it is just that I'm tired of the random buffering issues.  Idagio has some strange gaps.  Funny enough the last time I encountered one it was with the same symphony.  They had a needle drop bootleg of the Konwitschny (sp?) Schubert, but not the real deal release.  Qobuz had it though.
I never have that problem since I switched to a Roon server (Nucleus Plus), which has Qobuz built-in. I do recall having issues with their buggy app on my Windows laptop, though, and maybe my Macbook, too.

Wonderful playing and sound.

Yup it is the windows app when I'm at work.  I have to change the bitrate to trick it into rebuffering.  It is pretty stupid.

Relistening to an old fav, been too long.  This is an Eroica for the ages!  And yes I'm listening on YT, thanks for nothing Idagio! >:(

But I settled on Presto Music.

Schumann: Piano Quintet, Op. 44
Entremont; Alban Berg Quartett

I really liked the 2nd subject of the 1st movement. It has a lovely dialog between the cello and the same theme inverted in the viola.

I remember using Qobuz's software to stream, and was constantly irritated by buffering, but since I bought a Compatible Roon streamer, there are no problems anymore, and I also bypass the software from my office streamer the Cambridge, notoriously known for creating problems. Under Roon that is no issue anymore. I do not have the very expensive server that Bachthoven is using, the (Nucleus Plus), but a dedicated windows server, which works well too. Never any problems. As a matter of fact I used both and tried the Nucleus Plus, versus the much cheaper Windows intel 3, and heard no difference whatsoever. So I went for the cheaper option.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Ensemble Peregrina, Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett.
Recorded, Kirche Heilig Kreuz, Binningen-Bottmingen BL (CH), 2012.

I could say much or little about this recording, thus I go for the second option. Superb, SOTA sound, and as a performance the term Sublime would suffice.

British Cello Works - Volume 2.
See back cover for details.
Lionel Handy, Cello, Jennifer Walsh, Piano.
Recorded at Winchester College UK on 2021.

I enjoyed this Volume II as much as I enjoyed the first volume. On this disc I especially like the  Sonata in A Minor for cello and piano Op.5 (1887) by Ethel Smyth. I generally adore most of the works she composed, but the A minor sonata is a favourite in my book. Also the  Sonata in E minor for cello and piano Op.132 (1951) by Armstrong Gibbs, makes me sit up.  Michael Ponder recorded it, so that means serious business.
