Max Reger

Max Reger's music for organ is one of the most important after Bach.
Why is he so little loved, is it because his music is so complicated, most of us are too!  :)
You often read that these late Romantic works  wich are built on a Baroque foundation have a cerebral/academic character, but does that get in the way of listening?
It is noted that Reger's music looks like raisin bread, but he himself claimed that there was not one note too many.
Son of a village teacher like Schubert and Bruckner, his talent was noticed early.
Reger was a 'loner' who went his own way driven by a holy fire, a barrel full of contradictions, a complicated character, the music came above all.
Excessive use of tobacco and alcohol brought an early end to his life, he died at the age of only 43.
After his death he fell into oblivion and that is really a shame, his music is not without poetry and impressive musical portrayal that at times grabs you by the throat due to its overwhelming character and never fails to make a deep impression.
I have yet to begin the journey in these organ works and I consider myself fortunate to have familiarized myself with Messiaen's organ music so that I can enter his musical world more easily.

I've been eagerly awaiting this new recording. As Mandryka mentioned: excellent!

How did you know it was going to be so good?!

Honegger's Rhapsodie for two flutes, clarinet and piano is a gem, an absolute miracle.

Beautiful intertwining melodies, haunting harmonies in a general pastoral vein. Just beautiful. I also listen to Honegger's Clarinet Sonatina, and again the first movement really captivated me.

Finished with the last seven of Koechlin's 14 pieces for clarinet and piano. Nice, but he's no Honegger.

OK that's done it, I'll have a listen soon.

You're getting more reposed I see.

Maybe a little, but the Koechlin clarinet and piano pieces are not the most uber-reposed works.

Just a hunch based on this previous album:

This is true -- I don't think that music is very interesting.

But don't neglect the fifth!  It is phenomenal and underrated.

It had been very good up to the point next door's niece started playing her trumpet in the garden >:( .
