Traverso

After an enthusiastic review of Que I decided to buy this recording. I found a buyer in GB and purchased the CD on September 6. I paid custom tax twice, once to the seller, but at customs they found that this was not enough, so I paid almost double the price of the CD because of the administration costs and such.
A month ago I received a message that after payment the mail would be delivered, this happened a full month after the announcement.

Anyway, now I'm going to listen....

Second try, a smartphone is a tiny device to post from. Annoying contraption.
I have ordered several times from the foreign country called "Little Britain" and was confronted with the same irritating problems as you. I wanted to take a subscription on Gramophone, and it turned out the same way as with you, I had to pay twice the tax over it. So I canceled it. Until the Brits come to their senses and join the EU again, I will refrain ordering anything out of that realm.

Quote from: DaveF on October 18, 2024, 03:09:01 AMNo, I was suggesting more a means for sharing OOP recordings (which appears to be legal, at least under US law based on what gets uploaded to archive.org), rather than a free-for-all CD-pirating service.

Noted. I haven't investigated the extent to which archive.org complies with the law versus the extent to which people can't be bothered enforcing the law (as in private copyright). However I doubt that "out of print" is a genuine legal factor. My view is that it SHOULD be but I was very aware when I studied Australian law that there was no obligation to supply the market.

It's actually only a couple of weeks ago that I gave up on a fruitless attempt to find out who now owns the copyright to some recordings from the 1960s and 70s. I've concluded that most likely nobody cares about the recordings, that they're low value, and that if anybody managed to upload them to the internet there would be zero consequences.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

First listen to this recent purchase (and, IIRC, to any of Isaac Albéniz's sings)...

CD I.
Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus, op.43, overture in C major (1801)

ANIMA ETERNA BRUGGE. JOS VAN IMMERSEEL.
Recorded: December 2005, May 2006, at the Concertgebouw, Brugge, Belgium.

Absolutely sublime! This is another interpretation of Beethoven"s Orchestral works that needs to be heard. There are many things to discover, that you will not hear in other recordings. Riveting music making, super detailed and a passionate surge right into higher sferes. SOTA sound!

Beach, Amy (1867-1944) - Concertos & Chamber Music w/ the Piano Quintet duplicated -  Dave :)

QuoteAmy Marcy Cheney Beach was an American composer and pianist. She was the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music. Her "Gaelic" Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first symphony composed and published by an American woman. She was one of the first American composers to succeed without the benefit of European training, and one of the most respected and acclaimed American composers of her era. As a pianist, she was noted for concerts she gave featuring her own music in the United States and in Germany. (Source)

Wow!  How could they (the sellers) get the custom taxes so wrong?  What a mess!

Are those on period instruments or modern?

I really struggle with these discs.  For sure the playing and the engineering IS absolutely top drawer.  And the HIP instruments ensures real clarity of texture.  BUT, once those elements are stripped out - is there really any interpreatation going on at all??  To my ears they are just a speed fest played with brilliance and technique.  Where is the warmth, where is the humanity, where are those little moments of elegance and grace that make this extraordinary music breath and smile.  Literally the only set of the Beethoven symphonies I have bought and then sold!  Sorry Harry!!

That looks like it could be quite interesting!  Are there many traditional influences to the music or are the pieces very modern or other influences?

Le Marteau sans maître, and most particularly, "Bel Édifice et les pressentiments", double (the final section) is in my IMHO one of the high points of 20th century music.

Hope you enjoy it!
