Martinu

Martinu concerti are always a good choice!

Revisiting a classic recording: if you do not know the Sibelius recordings of Sir Colin Davis, give them a try!

And Symphony #3 does not get enough attention!  ;)

The Juilliard SQ plays Elliott Carter's Second Quartet and Willian Schuman's Quartet No. 3

this is the world première recording of Carter's Second Quartet, released in 1961, just a couple of years after the quartet was composed. It is not to be confused with the Juilliard's later recording included in the (then) complete set released in 1991 on Sony. That set, in turn, was expanded in 2014 to include all five numbered quartets.

This Second Quartett is a towering masterpiece in my opinion. The Schuman will be new to me (I've had very little exposure to that composer's work, something I might need to remedy).

On CD 6 of this set:

I shall certainly regret this.

Sorry.

PM are always possible.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Oh yes, I do know that work from this album!

Not in this issue Karl, for me that terminates a friendship.

Quote from: AnotherSpin on November 04, 2024, 07:20:23 AMWe have arrived. Now, when we say any - I emphasize, any - word, we must be careful, because there will always be someone who will understand and interpret it in the most unexpected or strange way. After all, each person conditioned in its different way and the possibilities are endless. The times when one could speak openly without fear of the 'cancel police' are over. It's all over now, baby (oops, sorry) blue.

If I ever have the short-sightedness to mistakenly regard a call for civility and respect as "censorship," my nearest and dearest would be rightly disappointed in me, as well.

I don't know this music well at all, but the singing and pianism are really good, so I dig it. Just don't ask me to compare to reference recordings!  :P

I like Bostridge's Schubert from this recording, I should hear more:

Really? Stating the simple (and by the way) incontestable fact that women in my life would regard being addressed as "babe" as demeaning? I guess you're right: no friendship that cannot stand the stress of a mere fact is really a friendship.

Quote from: DavidW on November 03, 2024, 12:28:49 PMRelisten to Martinu's Concerto for Violin and Piano. I've heard many concertos, symphonies, string quartets, other chamber works, short operas... but this might be it. My favorite Martinu work. I'll have to keep listening.

I've listen to this recording, and agree it is a wonderful work. It is in the 4CD Hogwood set of works for violin and orchestra on Hyperion, so I have listened to it before, but it did not make an impression at the time. I went back and put the Hogwood on again, and it made no impression this time either. I can't put my finger on what is wrong with Hogwood, but it doesn't sparkle like the Popelka recording does. (I think I should go down the list of the pieces in the Hogwood set and find other recordings of them.)
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Have it your way. You simply do not grasp the essence of my reaction. Real friends would.

The voice has changed so much, that's the disconcerting thing if you know his earlier recordings. Wonderful covers on that series.
