A beautiful recording from this treasure box. You can feel the dedication with which these musicians express the score.
This music with its modest character evokes memories from times gone by.

Searching for LPs and meeting other enthusiasts in the shops where you could meet each other, it is all a thing of the past, there are no more shops where you can buy LPs or CDs. In the old days you walked home with a feeling of carrying a treasure with you.

It has all become much more businesslike but the music has remained alive, although it is no longer the adventure it used to be.

Yes, I much agree, and it is a sad development, isolating people more and more.  Such is "progress," * but we at least have a forum like this, where an American enthusiast can write to a person in the Netherlands and not need two weeks or more for the reply to arrive via airmail!

Here is one one of the Biber selections via YouTube: excellent performance indeed!

* An American "public philosopher," to use an old term, named William F. Buckley, once said it was the task of Conservatives to stand in front of the bulldozer of Progress and yell "STOP"!  ;D  Then the questions were: Is this really what progress should be?  Have we thought about this carefully?

For some he is a bit of a hardliner, (Eben) so I am curious what you make of him. And well Martinu, he pops up in my search for recordings I want to hear. By now I already selected about 3000 CD's on Qobuz, and counting ;D

Give African women a washing machine so they don't have to go to the river anymore. The result is less social contact, modernization often has side effects that were not foreseen. This is something that can easily be misunderstood. Isolation and the disappearance of cohesion are often the consequences of the "efficient" society

By the way, there is a new "bulldozer" which I will not comment on further.

Yes, I saw some comments on YouTube from someone getting an ulcer from the Piano Trio;D  I am just now finishing the Piano Trio, and it is very much in the vein of of Schoenberg's comment that there are still plenty of possibilities in C Major, i.e. in traditional tonality!

An excellent work, and YouTube provided a link to his Piano Concerto, which I will try next!

So far, it RAWKS!!!  ;D  8)

These really are brilliantly colourful set pieces, like a series of vivid mini tableaux, making a pleasure of seeing the action with ones ears as it were. I've never actually seen it live or on video, but listening to it conjures up so many images in my mind, it seems time to take a peek at somebody else's impressions.
It's my first encounter with conductor Kahchun Wong, and I must say he and the Halle arrive in a blaze of colour and detail, the score opens up like a bottle of champagne and everything is so vivid. Am now keen to hear other recordings of his.

It is CPE Bach time!

But instead of going for the next volume in the BIS series by Spányi, I picked this new recording by Tom Beghin - also on clavichord.

Quote from: Harry on November 07, 2024, 12:50:00 AMVery much so Jeffrey. I admire her compositions, and wish she was more often recorded.
Me too Harry. I was just thinking that the Carwithen CD is one that I can play through from beginning to end with much pleasure (just under one hour of music in total). There is also a very good Chandos CD of her chamber music.

I discovered that Mozart was 15 or so, when he composed it.

Was it worthwhile?

Wonderful work, but not the most polished performance, I'm afraid...
