No surprise: I really like the clarinet opening the second movement, Tendre.

VonStupp

Heitor Villa-Lobos
String Quartet 11 -17
Cuarteto Latinoamericano

I like the composer's concision in these later quartets. My favorite of this lot was probably no. 11, and the slow movement of no. 15 stood out to me as something special.

Rossini, divino maestro, Helios of Italy, you who have spread your sounding rays over the entire world [...] I myself take pleasure in your golden tones, your melodious lights, your sparkling butterfly dreams, which frolic about me so delightfully, and kiss my heart as though with the lips of the Graces. - Heinrich Heine
"Beauty must appeal to the senses, must provide us with immediate enjoyment, must impress us or insinuate itself into us without any effort on our part." - Claude Debussy

Sibelius: Violin Concerto
Salvatore Accardo
Colin Davis, London Symphony

My favorite part early in the first movement, when the Orchestra comes in, feels a bit wimpy here. It's one of those epic chills down your back moments for me, and I just didn't get it this time.

Linz

Igor Stravinsky Concerto for piano, winds, double bass, kettledrums, Nikita Magaloff, piano
Bernd Alois Zimmermann Symphony in one movement (version 1953)
Wolfgang Fortner Symphony for large orchestra
György Ligeti Lontano, NDR Sinfonieorchester, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Günter Wand

Dry Brett Kavanaugh

Linz

Bruckner Symphony No. 8 in C Minor, 1887/90 Mixed Versions. Ed. Robert Haas, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Haitink

Cello Concerto 'Live free or Die'
Yale Symphony Orchestra

First night music of the evening. New to me, and not very soporific.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Tolstoy

VonStupp

George Lloyd
Symphony 3 in F
Charade (Scenes from the '60s)
BBC PO - George Lloyd

Charade does not remind me of the 60s, nor does it sound satirical. Of course, it is 60 years removed from now, representing experiences from across the Atlantic, and played by a symphony orchestra. Perhaps you had to be there.

I was there! Just.

More deliberately soothing in the dark...

Quincy Porter
Viola Concerto
Northwest Sinfonia
Eliesha Nelson

Rain in the streetlights and a level of insomnia make Porter fairly palatable tonight. Pleasant enough but probably not a regular listen.
