Der lächelnde Schatten

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 09, 2025, 09:27:39 AMOh, I need to revisit the Handel concerti grossi.

Yeah, they're great fun, Karl! Love them!

Jasmine Morris: Jack Broke Da Prison Door (JACK Quartet, recorded 9-18-24). A composer new to me, who lives in London. Lots of unusual string techniques, and as usual, the JACK guys are 100% committed.

At first glance — and yep, even on the second — I can't help but notice a sad, lifeless excuse for a dick on the left.

Instrument is a Graf fortepiano (Number 429) built in 1820 and restored 2021-2023.

I suspect Prosseda may have consulted with @Florestan when writing the liner notes:

I can only be glad that my views are corroborated by an expert.  :)

Piano Music.
Ian Hobson, Piano.
Recorded: 2016 in the Foellinger Hall, Krannert Center, Urbana, Illinois.

It must be said she was a talented composer and accomplished performer, and wrote beautiful music to boot. She is as good as any composer from this time, and can still inspired awe for her music. I for one found her worth pretty quickly. Hobson is a robust pianist, but gets the most of of her works, but a tad more subtilty would not go amiss. Recommended.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Gottschalk, Louis Moreau (1829-1869) - Piano Works w/ Philip Martin who recorded 8 volumes - first 4 up for a morning listen; beautiful artwork by Henri Rousseau - short summary bio below. He died young and abruptly, cause probably a ruptured appendicitis but he also had malaria and was heavily dosed on quinine.  Dave :)

QuoteLouis Moreau Gottschalk was an American composer, pianist, and virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano works, who spent most of his working career outside the United States. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Edward Gottschalk and Aimée Marie Bruslé. He had six brothers and sisters, five of whom were half-siblings by his father's biracial mistress. (Source)

Fine performances and well recorded. An ensemble that clearly connect on all levels, for they sound as one completely integrated body. Interesting array of composers, in a compositorial sense clearly connected.

A prescription of Mozart serenades seems an appropriate follow-up medication.

A second listen that's really a first listen because my attention wandered badly the first time.
(Not the music's fault, just my bad choice to try listening after a long work day. So now I'm listening before I go into work.)

Ensemble Alte Musik Köln, Leon Berben.
Recorded: 2008, at the Evangelical church, Honrath, Germany.

This is really a outstanding release. The choice of composers is brilliantly conceived, the recording is SOTA, and to top all, a performance that is jaw dropping. However I could miss this recording is a riddle to me. Every concerto is unbelievably complex on a technical level, especially the composition of Lonati, and is performed with a precision that takes my breath away. For Baroque fans this recording is a must. This ensemble raises the bar considerable for future performances. It's hard to top this.
