Villa-Lobos: Choros no.8 (for orchestra)

Whoa. This one is really dense, a touch chaotic. There is a LOT going on, moreso than in previous pieces in the cycle. Apparently it's meant to evoke Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Ravel: Histoires naturelles

Such fabulous music. Three months ago I didn't know these songs, and now I've heard 2 different performances which both make me think this is some of Ravel's finest work. The poems themselves are very good, and Ravel enhances them with his varied and vivid music.

Dvorak
Mazurek/Mazurka for violin and orchestra
Rondo for cello and orchestra

The Mazurek makes a great start to an album of generally smaller Dvorak works, played with lots of character. Unfortunately there wasn't room on the disc for the other smaller violin/orch work, the Romance. But this is great.

Yablonsky as both soloist and conductor also gives the Rondo plenty of bounce - it's a lot faster than the Tortelier/Previn recording I have, and that's largely to the piece's benefit.

This morning, Xenakis - La Légende D'Eer (2004 mix)

I'm very happy with the sound of this 47 minute 7 channel tape work on my current music player and headphones; the twittering, whistling, rattling, grating, creaking, scraping and whooshing noises were all well audible and distinct while not quite harsh enough to be unbearable. I found it quite calming to relax and let the audio storm rage around me.

Joseph Lauber (1864–1952)
Symphony No. 4 & 5.
Sinfonie Orchester Biel Solothurn, Kaspar Zehnder.
Recorded:  Diaconis Kirche Bern, 2021.

A very interesting composer, hugely neglected, and actually rejected by most classical music lovers.
Worth a try!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Monday afternoon is improving!
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"
