j winter

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Leonard Bernstein: Symphony No.2, "The Age of Anxiety". Marin Alsop, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, w/ Jean-Yves Thibaudet piano soloist

Fitting music for times of crisis, though I suppose the prevailing anxieties of today are nothing close to those of the time in which this was written (1949). It amazes me how early on in his career Bernstein was when he wrote his first two symphonies, as they are highly developed, mature works.

Having been very impressed by Salomon OP 20 I thought I'd check out what they make of op  50, starting with the one in B flat.

Alban Berg Quartet
"l do not consider my music as atonal, but rather as non-tonal. I feel the unity of all keys. Atonal music by modern composers admits of no key at all, no feeling of any definite center." - Arnold Schoenberg

I'm listening to a great modernist,  20 century, utter genius from Poland, name Tadeusz Bair his  symphony 1-3 , found out ,  my sloppy room this... wow.

In between Schoenberg atonal  moment and Alan Hovhaness mystical fantasy there is the Sound of great sir Tadeusz baird, this is my opinion my ears, nervous system, brain stimulation & introspective night.
This is smart yet simple modern(not super modern) era
not super modern ala Tristan Murail  a notorious Spectralist from France I.e little inside joke, that has is shares of truth but whatever, anyone like his work dear Good Music Guide folk or lady that is listening to Him...

He from Poland but dos ain't sounded that polish, he not like the polish I know from there: Penderecki or Lutoslavsky?
Whom are more grim?

He is like I've said Schoenberg-ian, and Hovhaness-ian quite a bit in  the universal sphere of  sounds , the panorama of music, how it feel.

I've been listening the Partita and Variations from this CD quite a lot lately:

OK, but can't hold a candle to the Szell recordings in the Szell box.

[asin] B079VD2YRP[/asin]

I haven't listened to the Violin Concerto on this Hyperion disc yet, but that would have to compete against Chung/Previn, among others.

Khachaturian's Symphonies 2 and 3 from here:

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

The set is completed by 20 minutes from an unfinished oratorio, Christus. Mendelssohn died before he could get more work done. Despite their fragmentary nature, the extracts are major Mendelssohn, truly gorgeous music.

Paulus is a powerful work, one I enjoy somewhat more than Elias. Unfortunately the first disc had a defect that really marred listening. Otherwise, the performance is splendid.

André

This takes some getting used to. Over an hour of slow-moving, sparsely accompanied monodic chanting. Once the musical idiom is absorbed, listening is pleasant, but the sameness brings a detachment from the literary/dramatic argument. IOW one stops paying attention to what's sung. Not a significant musical or spiritual experience, then. And yet, there are 3 recordings of it...

Troubadour music. I love this kind of stuff. Should listen more often!
