Martinů
Sonata for Flute, Violin, and Piano, H 254
Fenwick Smith (flute), Haldan Martinson (violin), Sally Pinkas (piano)

So fantastic! But this may be just the old bias rearing its' ugly head. For those that don't know here or who have been seeing my posts over the years, Martinů is one of my all-time favorites. His blend of Czech folk melodies, Neoclassicism, and Impressionism into a unique synthesis that can only be called his own is truly remarkable and a feast for these ears. I'm sure others here feel similarly.

Speaking of Martinu, did you know about this one?

It was released last month.

Ah yes, I have seen that recording, but I don't really need it as I have the recording with the Smetana Trio on Supraphon and I'm rather satisfied with it. I don't really see those particular performances being bettered. But I will say that I don't believe Martinů's Piano Trios to be among his better works. They have some strong ideas, but they just aren't on par with many of his other chamber works.

I tend to agree with this (bolded text). Whilst they contain good music, I feel there is no that 'spark' others works of his do have.

Glad to see someone else is exploring this set; I've been listening off and on for the past month or so... very nice, old school Haydn.

Today, spinning some old Naxos Bach I haven't listened to in probably 10 years.... on revisiting, I'm not sure why I neglected these discs for so long, these are quite solid...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

To the bolded text, bingo! We have a winner. This is exactly what's missing in these works. There's a certain rhythmic snap in Martinů's music that the PTs just seem to lack, although I will say I liked Bergerettes which isn't a 'piano trio' as far as the title of the work in concerned, but contains the same instrumentation. It's found on that afore mentioned Supraphon recording with the Smetana Trio.

Moving on to CD 10, with the majority of the Neuminster Chorales.
I think Hurford's treatment of the chorales may be the best part of this set.

Thread duty -

Weinberg
Piano Quintet, Op. 18
ARC Ensemble

What prompted me to listen to some Weinberg was he's the 'Composer of the Month' in the latest BBC Music Magazine. I also want to add that I think it's fantastic that he's getting more and more attention as I think he truly deserves it. A Soviet composer with a lyrical heart and where he defers from Shostakovich, IMHO, is most definitely in the harmonic and melodic language. When you really listen to both composers, you realize that just the way they build and resolve tension is startlingly different. Both composers knew how to dig deep and tap into so many emotions, but whereas I think Shostakovich could be more grotesque in the way he goes about the music, Weinberg always remained lyrical. I'm not sure if any of this makes any sense, but it's what I hear.

And that's a beauty!

It is very enjoyable. The sound is a bit metallic, but it is easy to tune out. Do you like these performances, J Winter?

I keep bouncing back to it as well, but I love trying new recordings and interpretations/voices. I think I will follow Traverso's suggestion and  find the Kirkby performance next time!

Listened to Astrid Varnay singing in Wagner's Die Walküre.  It was a cheap Membran compilation originating from the Knappertsbusch 1957 Bayreuth performance. Excellent! I haven't listened much to Varnay so it appears as if there is a goldmine of historical recordings. Yay!  >:D
